Evan Hansen is starting his first year of college. After what felt like an eternity, senior year was over, and he had finally graduated. Evan was hoping that college would be a fresh start, a new beginning that didn’t involve last year's “incident.”
Jared Kleinman was also about to start his first year of college. Now, with high school behind him, he didn’t have to pretend to have friends the way he used to. Now, he could actually try and MAKE some. He was looking forward to the college experience: friends, parties, and hijinks.
Evan and Jared, college freshmen, both just so happened to be attending the same school. They had also both chosen to be assigned a random roommate for their dorm.
Little did they know, this decision would cause their lives to once again be intermingled.

Jared Kleinman was born deaf. Luckily, he was able to get cochlear implants, allowing him to hear.
He's always known quite a bit of sign, considering the extra class he's had to take since elementary with other students who too were deaf or hard of hearing. His parents were also always teaching him new signs, some he even learned on his own time.
He's never really thought about giving anyone outside of his family a sign name, not that he's really had to. There was already a sign for mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, ect. There's also those cousins that he's never even spoken to, too.
Maybe giving his boyfriend one would be a good start.
