The silence that followed was not the sharp, dreaded kind. It was patient. A quiet that waited. Nick shifted on the couch beside him, the worn cushions sighing beneath his weight. His face softened, one eyebrow quirking gently upward. “Yeah?” he murmured, voice tinged with both curiosity and caution. “What would that be?”
Charlie inhaled—deep and shaky, the way one might before diving headfirst into freezing water—and then said it.

Nick groans, he releases Charlie's hand and pulls the other one away from his face. He takes the ice pack back from him and gently pushes Charlie away so he slides along the bench from him. Effectively creating a foot of space between the two boys. "You, Charlie Spring, are too good for this world. And I am going to kiss your face if you don't stop."
Charlie goes from looking confused to looking very interested. "Really? Is that so Nicholas? Well, in that case. Follow me." He jumps up from the table and begins to head back into the school. Nick doesn't need to be told twice. He's pretty sure he'd follow Charlie anywhere. Especially when somewhere turns out to be an empty classroom where Charlie is finally able to push Nick up against the nearest wall and pull Nick's mouth toward his own until they are slotted together.
Nick's knees go weak. he can't help it. And everything feels better then. It doesn't matter about some nameless person who has a crush on Charlie. Because Nick actually has Charlie, here, in his arms. His mouth pressed warm and wanting against his own. Nick has Charlie, and Charlie has Nick. And that's enough. It really is.
