Summary
Josh suppressed a cackle at the irony of the situation. Here he was, the original villain of this story, and now he was the one with the girl on one side and a machete on the other, leading their small group of battered survivors to safety. This was supposed to be Mike's thing, wasn't it?

Summary
Josh knows people die: he knows his grandma died when he was a baby, and Benrey said he died a few times too. Josh knows he can from experience, too. But grandma can’t come back because she’s “up there” and Benrey’s sleeping on their living room couch. No matter how many times he replayed the conversation about that in his head, it was still so much to adjust to.
At least the funny shark-teeth guy can fight away the monsters under his bed, and Josh thinks he helps dad with his too, so he’s okay with him staying, even if he’s gonna live forever. Maybe it can help dad not die too.

Summary
“Not this time..this time was different. Josh, you were-..” he paused looking up to the ceiling with closed eyes, shaking his head softly, “You were seizing, your brain was burning. They couldn’t get the fever down and we were losing you. It was different this time,” he ended quietly, staring at the stark white sheets that Josh was wrapped tightly in.
“I’m sorry,” Josh whispered, slowly reaching to put his hand over Jake’s.
In response, Jake stood, silently gesturing for Josh to scoot over. He crawled into the bed and squished as close as he could.
“Just don’t scare me like that anymore.”
