Summary
Petalkit didn’t remember much from that day.
She remembered that it was wet. Then it was cold, very cold.
She remembered that they walked for a long time, a very long time. It was the longest she’d ever walked.
She remembered her mother and her brothers were with her.
She didn’t remember much from that day.
But she did remember one thing, she remembered it very clearly.
His eyes. His words.
The way he looked down on her and her brothers, with hate.
The words he said to them.
They weren't his kits. They shouldn't exist, they were a mistake. He could never love kits like that.
.
.
.
Or, what if Mapleshade didn’t make her kits cross the stepping stones? What if she found another way to cross the river? What if she told Frecklewish from the beginning that her kits weren’t Birchface’s? -

Summary
Swiftstar looked down at his medicine cat. “You say you know the will of StarClan, Larkwing, but can you tell me why the moon is still shining? If StarClan didn’t agree that SkyClan should leave the forest, they would send clouds to cover the sky.”
Larkwing said nothing, staring pleadingly at the sky. The lights of Silverpelt flickered coldly above.
Fool. She was a fool for ever dreaming. Love was a curse, and she was bound to suffer its consequences.

Summary
"That’s maybe who you were, but that’s not who you are now. I’ve known you for two moons now and I’ll admit I’m a little scared of you, but you haven’t done anything to hurt me. You listened to my advice and didn’t hurt yourself or the Twolegs, either.” He placed one paw on her chest, where her heart would be. “You were hurting and didn’t know what you were doing. You did some bad things, but… you can change, Mapleshade. You’re already changing.” In Myler’s gaze and her chest sparked something that Mapleshade hadn’t felt in a long while - hope for a better future.
Mapleshade survives Mapleshade's Vengeance and finds a new home on Myler's farm, learning how to live as a barn cat. Haunted by what she's done and terrified by StarClan's warnings of eternal suffering, Mapleshade struggles with trying to adjust to 'regular' life. As anger threatens to overcome her again, she leans on Myler for support, discovering that there's much more to the barn cat than just a soft kittypet. A new friendship with WindClan brings new opportunities, and Mapleshade finds the ability to forge a new path for herself alongside new cats, in new places, and just maybe... with new love. -
