That was what his handler had said to him, surrounded by those flashing red lights and sirens; that people would come, to claim or to take, to use their authority to pull him back in. Fight it, he had told him. Fight them. Kill them and die trying. He'd not had the presence of mind at the time to ask if he’d meant or die trying instead, because handlers didn’t make mistakes.
The problem is he doesn’t want to.
Set after Zemo triggers Bucky’s programming in CA:CW. Rumlow gets to the Winter Soldier before Steve.

Two New Year's Eves. The Winter Soldier in Berlin, 1989; Bucky Barnes in his apartment with Sam Wilson and a glass of champagne, 2026.
A great cheer rises up from below the Brandenburg Gate and the Soldier catches sight of a burning flag before it plunges off the roof and into the dark alleyway. There are other rats here, scurrying with hungry eyes between the discarded parts of human lives. It feels like a rat, not a дезертир [deserter, rat] but the animal itself, the desperate always hungering drive to eat. Hydra would say he is a tiger, a predator, something greater than himself.
It has seen a tiger, in Vietnam. A hungry beast stalking the same humans it was, magnificent in the shadows, watching men, waiting for one of them to leave the safety of the firelight; in the morning it had been trussed up to a pole, dead, paws fat and overgrown and bound tight with fat snakes of rope, fiery eyes unseeing, stripes no longer slashes of shadow and rippling muscle but the motley of a performing jester. A rat would never die like that. A rat will die, dignified, in the dirt, and another will take its place.

The first impact hurt, and he was sure he had more than a few bruises. The second impact forced the air out of Tony’s lungs. When he felt the third impact, he heard a loud crack come from below him.

Had it come from inside of him?
Sure he was hurting, but to the point of something inside of him breaking? Surely that had to have been something else - his suit, perhaps. Almost immediately after he thought that, the initial shock seemed to have worn off because a sharp, burning sensation began growing in his chest.
