Summary
In an Albion where the oceans are higher, where Camelot is a port city and pirates plague the seas, Prince Arthur Pendragon struggles under the weight of his duty and his doubts. For almost twenty years he's honed himself to become the sword his father wants him to be, but he's begun to wonder if a ruler relying too much on the sword is more dangerous to his people than any foe.
Meanwhile Lady Morgana can no longer avoid the shadows that plague her in her waking hours as well as her dreams, and resolves to save herself from exhaustion and madness. But searching for forbidden knowledge in Camelot can be deadly, even for the king's ward.
And Merlin, the prince's manservant, holds more secrets than either of them. Between trying to free the dragon under the castle, protecting Arthur from magical threats that Camelot is no longer capable of grappling with, and keeping his head attached to his shoulders, he can barely keep up with his life as it is. Throwing in prophecies is just excessive.
This is a story carried by many hands, because in a land of myth and a time of magic, the destiny of a great kingdom can't be shouldered by any one person alone.

A rewrite of Merlin if the writers weren’t cowards. A lot gayer, magic users aren’t the enemy in every single episode, and Uther is the actual villain of the story. Morgana is still a villain, but we have sympathy for her.

In a kingdom where magic is hated and forbidden by the king, there is one thing that even he cannot stop with all his might. Soul marks are magical bonds that unite two souls meant for each other. Soul marks also help you feel what your soulmate feels, but only if they keep the connection open, otherwise the most you can feel are just tingles or a shadow of what they really feel. They are imprinted on the skin and come in different forms from one person to another. They are meant to be identical only to their exact copy. Usually the soul mark is in the same place on both people, but there are a few exceptions that no ordinary person knows about. These exceptions are rare and there are only a handful of such bonds in 100 years. When a being of magic is bound to a soul that has no affinity for magic, the soul marks are in different places because even if fate has bound them, even she does not know what can happen between two souls so different. Usually the chance of them meeting is almost impossible, but when destiny has a say, even the impossible disappears.

Gwaine was baffled. Was it really possible he was the only one to notice the difference in Merlin's behaviour since the Lamia?
Even if the others didn't seem to care, Gwaine wouldn't lose his friend. He would investigate if necessary, he would fight someone, he would even get banished again but he WOULDN'T lose Merlin.
Unfortunately it proves almost impossible to find out what happened that dark day. With Merlin avoiding him alltogether and Arthur and the Knights blissfully unaware, Gwaine can only count on himself. It's a good thing his middle name is Sleuth (right next to Strength apparently).
Or: Gwaine doesnt remember what happened with the Lamia but he sees the consequences. This is him stepping in and being the good friend Merlin needed. I don't care if the show erased their friendship. That was THEIR mistake.
