They were never planning to protect their school from the non-magical problems it had. But one group ranting session about a classmate turned into a group project to take the responsibility of protecting the school from any non-magical threats. Knowingly to the school, they are the Miracle Gems; protectors to the school like how Team Miraculous would protect Paris. Unknown to the school, all the members of the Miracle Gems are the well known protectors of Paris, just without the use of magic.
Basically; Before Risk and Strickback (S4 Ep25-26) An event happens that changes the course of history, and results in Team Miraculous (Current of S5 Ep26) to become sleuths and detectives that protects their school from initially falling apart. With Mystery and Comedy (Attempted)

Which is absolutely great, now that he has his own pocket god and is one of the twenty-ish most powerful people in Paris. Yeah, he needed more magic in his life.
