Summary
Born and raised New Yorker Calum Hood is temporarily reassigned to a job site in the middle of nowhere New Jersey for six months. He clutches a sparkly acoustic guitar in one hand, baby blue painted nails biting into the strings as he waves at the crowd and settles onto his stool. “Hello,” he says, voice swaying from a deep register to a higher head voice with one single word, elongated through a crooked smile. “I’m Levi Halloway, and I’m here to play a few songs for you tonight,” he says, plucking a chord as he straightens his shoulders. His shirt strains over the length of his wingspan.
Ashton would be lying if he said he wasn’t intrigued already, drawn in after only a handful of words. He’s seen more random performers than he can count, mostly no name aspiring artists who just want someone to listen to them. Half the time they’re good enough to get a rousing applause at the end, while the other half of the time everyone has left the sitting area before they finish their set.
Other than Ashton of course. He always stays until the end.

Summary
As much as he may nearly count down the hours until he gets to speak to Luke again, that doesn’t mean that Luke is doing the same for him. Now that Luke is off touring and seeing new people and amazing sights, maybe he’s forgetting about the people waiting at home for him.
Maybe he’s forgetting Ashton is waiting at home for him.
But Ashton just reminds himself again that just because he’s a hopeless fool for Luke doesn’t mean that Luke feels the same about him. Quite the opposite, honestly, because he knows that Luke doesn’t feel the same about him, or they wouldn’t be in this position right now, friends with benefits instead of more.

He looks different. But also exactly the same. His hair catches the light, longer than it ever has been, curling down his neck and onto his forehead. His eyes are the same blue, even in part darkness, lips are the same pink as they wrap around the words he speaks to a couple of people Ashton’s not sure he knows. But he’s wearing glitter on his eyes, sparkling across his eyelids; something he never would have done when Ashton knew him, wearing a pink satin shirt that he would never have worn when Ashton knew him, holding a drink that Ashton wouldn’t have ever expected him to drink. He holds himself differently, less curled in on himself.
Luke and Ashton broke up when Luke left for tour. Ten months later, Luke comes back.

The first time Michael hears the piano is on Tuesday. He’s supposed to be practicing guitar for his Music Composition midterm, but he’s long since given up on whatever it was he’s trying to do today. None of the melodies he’s written feel right. Instead, he’s doodling on his open notebook, filled with fragments of sentences and barely comprehensive sounds, seeing if making the words first will help make the melody. He’s staring off into the space in front of him when he hears the sound of piano music filling the air.

« On semble si heureux. », souffla Michael. Il y avait dans sa voix un trémolo qui annonçait une tempête. Ashton ne connaissait que trop bien ce ton.
« Michael... », commença Ashton. Son meilleur ami attrapa sa main dans la sienne l'intimant de ne pas continuer sa phrase.
« Je sais ce que tu vas me dire. Ca fait deux ans, Ash. Je devrais aller mieux, je devrais être heureux. Je pourrais lui apporter tellement plus si j'allais bien mais ce n'est pas le cas. Il mérite d'avoir quelqu'un qui puisse le rendre son amour comme il le mérite. », marmonna Michael, trop blessé par ses propres paroles pour continuer son monologue. Ashton ferma les yeux une seconde, inspira profondément pour ne pas laisser la colère prendre le dessus.
« Michael, tu l'aimes autant que tu le peux. Il t'aime aussi. »
« Je sais. Mais est-ce que ça suffit ? », demanda Michael.

« Michael est malade ? », posa-t-il, se choquant encore de son manque de tact habituel. Calum lui lança un drôle de regard par dessus son épaule tandis qu'Ashton le fixa à travers le rétroviseur.
« Quoi ? », demanda le plus âgé, reposant son regard sur la route de temps en temps. Luke haussa une épaule.
« Il avait l'air fatigué. Ses yeux sont cernés. Je me demandais juste s'il était malade. », demanda Luke, expliquant la raison de sa question. Le visage d'Ashton se détendit un peu, sa main droite massant la cuisse de Calum maintenant qu'ils étaient arrêtés à un stop. Il soupira.
« C'est compliqué. Il traverse une phase difficile. », dit Ashton sans entrer dans les détails et Luke ne l'en apprécia que plus. S'il avait été à la place de Michael, il n'aurait pas aimé que son ami raconte ses histoires à tout le monde. Luke les découvriraient probablement au fur et à mesure.
