It’s been like this for hours. Hours. He’d asked for this, and Stede obliged, and that had been this morning. “I don’t think we’re going to make it back tonight,” Ed shouts backwards through the storm.
Stede knows that’s true, and he’s been afraid of saying it, but now the words are just— out there, and they have to deal with them.
“What do we do instead?” Stede asks him, voice lifted up over the pound of the wind, the whip of the rain, the deluge that soaks from above and sends their horse sliding in the mud torn up beneath her hooves.
There’s a moment where Ed doesn’t answer. Stede has his face pressed to his back, his arms wound tightly around him, clinging to him as they ride through the rain. If Ed had spoken, he’d at least feel the rumble of his words through his body, if he didn’t hear whatever it was he actually said.
It figures, honestly. The first time they’ve tried to just— spend a bit of time alone, for a little while, in a long time, and this happens. Of course, it would.

Stede considers the question with confusion before answering, “In here, I suppose. Unless you wanted—” His heart seizes in a way he hadn’t expected, a new excitement lacing through him. “Would— Maybe— Would you like to try it somewhere else?”
Ed huffs a laugh, pushing in closer to Stede again, tilting them both in near to each other so he can knock their foreheads together. His smile is warm, and kind, and Stede doesn’t fear his laughter anywhere near as much as he thought he would.
“I meant,” Ed clarifies, “where on you d’you want me to sit?”
Stede— sort of thought that that part was obvious, didn’t anticipate having to say this, and his palms are slick with sweat.

Summary

Backed into the corner of books, Stede’s attention wheels back and forth between one Ed, then the other, and back again. Sure enough, they’re both him, and despite his shock— his very reasonable shock, he thinks— Ed’s right.
