The first thing Jayce sees is the smoke. It chokes him, clogging his airways and clouding his vision. His ears are ringing.
The second thing Jayce sees is Mel, thankfully unharmed in his arms. She’s stunned, moving slowly, but she looks fine. They meet eyes briefly, hers brimming with tears.
His eyes scan the room, completely collapsed in on itself, crawling with enforcers and the injured councilors. Several lay unmoving beneath rubble.
He sees Councilor Kiramman, unmoving in a puddle of red. He releases Mel, his only thought making him crawl towards her prone body. He shakes her, once, twice, to no avail. She’s gone.
