Rashid is too exhausted to think about how odd it is that there’s light emanating from within his flat. He unlocks the door, tows his rollerboard inside, and then stares in jet-lagged shock at the baffling scene in front of him. Raglan could’ve warned him about this. Raglan should’ve warned him about this. Instead, he’s walking in to find an intruder curled up in the corner of his sofa watching an offbeat show with Bill Hader in it.
A familiar intruder, though. One he’s so glad to see that his heart’s abruptly in his throat.
Sam Barclay hits pause, turns to face Rashid, and blinks in surprise. “You’re home early.”
“Not by much,” Rashid says, propping his suitcase against the wall. “Why are you here?”
Sam scoots away from the arm of the sofa as Rashid approaches. “They didn’t tell you?”
“Nobody tells me nothing,” Rashid quotes, smiling at Sam as he plops down next to him.
Rolling his eyes, Sam glances at the telly. “Rather watch Hot Fuzz for old times’ sake?”

“Fareed is here because I volunteered tissue samples toward some of his research, but…” [Rashid] fetches one of his own faded t-shirts while Sam stumbles into a pair of boxers, and then helps Sam into the shirt. “I wasn’t expecting him to make a house call, much less bring guests.” Rashid pulls a pair of Sam’s jeans from one of the drawers while Sam fusses with his socks, and then helps him into those, too. “They’re old, Sam,” he finally blurts, agitated. “The companion and the friend, I mean.”
Sam finishes fastening his jeans, chewing his lower lip in concern. “Old enough to be frightening,” he murmurs, taking Rashid’s face in both hands, gently stroking his cheeks. “Poor sweetheart. I should’ve sensed something was amiss and gone out to hunt with you.”
Rashid shakes his head. “No. You haven’t been well. I’m…disconcerted at most.”
Sam turns out the closet light, taking Rashid’s hand. “Come on. I’ll tell ’em off.”
“Sam,” Rashid says urgently, dashing to keep up, “when I say they’re old, I mean…”

Summary
Daniel Molloy, following Lestat’s entourage on account of the documentary he’s filming, has in fact shown his face in the crowd. Raglan had been right about Sam’s presence being sufficient incentive for Daniel to attempt to catch him for comment on Paris once he’s offstage, maybe—or to assume that some other party might also show up because of Sam’s presence, in order to either speak with him or to enact vengeance.
Sam doesn’t need to flip any more switches or control the rest of what’s happening with his music. From here on out, it’s automated, although he’d taken into account he might have to lock it down at any point and simply watch his mark (or marks) if he’d happened to catch sight of him (or them) early. He probably seems distracted now even if the crowd can’t see his face; he’s not moving anymore in a way that anyone in their right mind would consider expressive. His stillness would strike Daniel as inhuman if Daniel happened to be paying attention to the stage.
Daniel hasn’t been paying attention to the performance. His back is turned, and he’s looking at something else.

Sometimes Rashid wished he had a desk job.
There were desk jobs within the Talamasca. Archivists who worked deep underground, cataloging and categorizing the artefacts that came through the motherhouse. It would have been dreadfully boring, but there was a stability there that part of him longed for.
Not that what he was doing now wasn’t stable. Most days the routine was almost dull. His employer -- not the Talamasca, no, the employer with fangs -- thrived on routine. Demanded it. Perhaps the most important part of Rashid’s job was to ensure everything went according to plan.
There was, of course, one reprieve to the unique mix of horror and monotony he faced every day.

Sam waits until the door closes, pitched into darkness, to roll away from the wall and squint blearily at his new minder. He’s afraid he might cry.
Armand looks like hell. His unkempt curls frame his face, unspeakably lovely for that fact. His shoes hit the floor. “Starving yourself?” he asks.
Sam shrugs, setting his jaw as his eyes start to sting. “I let him do it,” he grits out. “Let him do the thing that fuckin’ got him killed. Fair’s fair.”
“Rashid’s death is fair,” Armand says, sliding under the covers next to Sam, “because he knew the risks. He became a lawbreaker in your stead.”
“You’re saying my death wouldn’t be,” Sam whispers tremulously as Armand gathers him close, pressing his face against Armand’s exposed neck.
“I understand that you’re grieving,” Armand whispers back, “but I refuse to shoulder that just because you’ve forgotten everything we discussed.”
“Fuck right off. I have not,” Sam snarls, both ashamed and relieved that the provocation is enough to make him sink his fangs in Armand’s neck.
