To a demigod, it was strange but still nothing out of the ordinary. But Perse was different. Her dreams had always shown her more than most, even by demigod standards. And while they had sometimes repeated themselves, it had never this frequent. Every morning, Perse woke up with her veins burning from a poisoned tree and the smell of rotten eggs of a powerful monster clogging her nose.

Nine-year-old Percy Jackson runs away to avoid being killed by monsters like Sally and Gabe, accidentally winding up in Gotham. Bruce's "child with a traumatic backstory" senses activate and Percy gets adopted. It's a nonlinear story, with half of each chapter taking place before the Second Gigantomachy, and half of them taking place after, when Percy returns to Gotham.

The other children weren’t able to detect when someone was coming up behind them by the way their footsteps sounded, even if you were across the street. The other children couldn’t see the future or the past in their dreams or flashes of someone's fate when she looked at them. They weren’t able to hear the sound of someone’s breath from 30 feet away or smell their very scents from the same distance.
But Persi was okay with that. She didn’t need any of the other kids. They stayed away from her even if they couldn’t see her ever-changing eyes that could stare into your soul or her too-long fingers with claws instead of nails. But that was okay, she told herself, she had her Mom, she had her parents letters, she had her grandmother, and that was all she needed. Until it wasn't, She wasn't ready for the family she'd find, and the people ready to throw their hearts behind her.
But damn it all to Tartarus if she wasn't ready to fight tooth and nail to keep them close, to keep them safe. To love them back.
