Nicholas turned to lean back against the counter, crossing his arms over his stomach, and fixed Static Man with an inscrutable look. Sometimes, when Static Man was really having trouble reading him, he felt like he was looking at one of those optical illusions. The two faces and the vase, the girl and the old lady. He knew there was something to see there - in the heavy, straight brows, maybe, or the deep-set dark eyes; or the tension at the corners of the mouth, its sharp Cupid’s bow beneath the carefully trimmed edges of the mustache - but he just couldn’t get his vision to focus right.

Nicholas waved a hand dismissively, dropping his head into the cradle of his other hand and digging thumb and forefinger beneath the lenses of his glasses and into his closed eyelids. Static Man winced to see it, the squish of his eyeballs warping under the pressure. Maybe it was a side effect of bursting as many eyeballs as he had; he couldn’t help but think that Nicholas didn’t realize just how fragile they were.
“I’m sure that’s not necessary,” Nicholas said. “Better to keep our heads down. If we get too showy, it will only attract more attention, and you can’t reduce everyone to bone shards and blood splatter. Well - you could, but then there would be no one left to trade with on the forums.”
“Dude, no one says ‘forums’ anymore,” Static Man said. “It’s just Reddit.”

“Okay, hypocrite.”
Nicholas puts one fist on his hip, turning around to fully face Static Man. He leans forward over his cane, trying to be six feet and one inch of an imposing presence, despite the fact that Static Man remains a head taller than him. “Whatever do you mean by that?”
Static Man laughs, a tuning fork hit at just the right spot. “I mean that you’re, like, totally the same way. Fuckin’ porcupine with a heart of gold.”
“Huh,” Nicholas says, because two and a half years ago, he would never have envisioned himself with spikes. Chris was the one with armor; Chris was the one with a spine of steel that burst, bloodied, out from under her skin. But things have changed now, and with Nicholas’s amassing of magic comes an amassing of swords, too, he supposes. “I suppose you’re right.”

She was still holding his hand, though not in any kind of a tender embrace - it was, if anything, rather scientific. He found, to his surprise, that he was feeling mildly self-conscious, aware of the dry skin on his knuckles, of the hangnail on his thumb - even though he had no reason to care what she thought of his hand or any other part of him. It was something about the look in her eyes, this certain look she always seemed to have that said she knew exactly how something should be, and wouldn’t be shy about saying if she found it wanting.
“Uh,” said Static Man, and he cleared his throat like he expected it to embarrass her into letting go, but she just looked over at him expectantly. “Yeah, no, I mean… I mean, hell, I’ll live vicariously through you.”
Nicholas looked sharply over at him as Morgan tossed her head back and laughed. The movement was big, animated, and he wondered if they shouldn’t have cracked the second bottle, but on the other hand they had all just narrowly avoided death and dismemberment, in that order, and perhaps a little celebration wasn’t such a bad thing.
Then Morgan swung a leg over Nicholas’ thighs.

There was a but at the end there, which Static Man let it hang in the air, unspoken. Taken at face value, the words were close to a refusal. He was probably being careful not to agitate the double’s mother. But Nicholas heard their meaning.
It wasn’t ideal. But it was a body. And they had come so far.
