Summary
Nicole Skylar is widely considered one of the best operatives within SHIELD. She is the youngest person to become a full-time member of the Avengers. But her rise to the top has been a lonely one. She has no partner, no handler, no unit of her own. She is perfectly happy working as "alone" as any Avenger possibly can. Director Fury has been unsuccessful in getting her to take on a partner of any kind. She holds firm to the idea that having no-one else to worry about is the best way for her to work.
So how does she manage to end up with a whole team?

He knew as soon as he saw their expressions that they didn't truly understand, but perhaps that is for the best. After all, they couldn't possibly realize that his life had been boiled down to a series of stepping stones. That is all they were to him, all he could allow them to be. No matter how much he may have grown to like them he was still using them. Even if they protested otherwise. Because he could almost see the other shore now, and if he let himself falter, if he let himself stop for a moment and stand there with them the raging river of his own madness and uncertainty would sweep him away again and he doesn't think he could make his way back from that again.

He’s only known her for about 2 hours now and he’s mostly certain the woman is just a typical mother. He was kind of looking forward to the drugged out mad-woman everyone painted her to be. Would have made the evening a whole lot more interesting.

Inspired by a comment by nagini on "The Strike Team" and an old story I did from another comment on ff.net. It helps to have read "The Strike Team" before this, but you can maybe manage without it. Each chapter is done from the perspective of one Avenger and corresponds to one member of Nikki's team around the time of their induction.

Then his face turned pink, then red, and his eyes bulged and watered. He coughed and choked, then fell to the floor, twitching, spittle seeping from the corner of his mouth.
Hobi shrieked and flapped his hands, then fumbled to pull his phone from his pocket, yelling, “The first murder! I knew it!”
