    Summary

In which the Oracle attempts to seduce Horatius, and things go wrong (but eventually pretty right).

Dating a man she met in hell who lived and died two thousand years before her birth was never going to be without its challenges. The Oracle is well aware of this, despite the fact that every interaction with Horatius is better than the last - especially those times when the warmth in his bronze eyes feels more like fire, and she nearly combusts from pent-up desire, and the only things stopping them from tumbling into bed (or wherever) are his Herculean self-control and her fear of disappointing him.

It's then she realizes: their problem isn't the time between visits, or the two millennia between their origins, or the demands of his military career. Their problem is in the bedroom.

Or rather, their problem is about the bedroom, since they never actually make it that far. Because if Horatius is a man for whom self-control is paramount and she's afraid to show him just how passionate she can be, how are they ever going to cross this line?

    Summary

Time heals all wounds - or so the saying goes. A trite consolation for those who are helplessly mired in pain.

But what happens when time is the cause of one’s wounds? What happens when time, though wielded as a tool to redress unimaginable cruelty, has also carved out pieces of a person in the process? Displacement in time. Repetition of time. Separation by time. Injury after injury. Where is the consolation then? The comfort? The hope?

When time is what has wounded so deeply, where then does one turn for healing?

    Summary

Faced with spending the rest of her life in classical antiquity, the Oracle adapts with the help of the ancient family who now, finally, remember her. If she leans most on the steady, reassuring presence of a certain Stoic legionary, it's only with the understanding that she can never allow herself to forget this truth: Horatius has three great loves, and she isn't among them. His life is ordered around Stoicism, the legion, and his girl. The Oracle always wanted him to be happy in that life. She just never thought she'd have to watch him live it.

For his part, Horatius thinks theirs will be a strange relationship. Fitting for a strange woman, from a strange world, with strange thoughts and strange speech, who looks at him with a strange familiarity that makes the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. And yet, he cannot stop it, the compulsion to reciprocate in kind, and he finds that the strangest thing of all.

AU wherein the Oracle remains displaced in time.

    Summary

In which the Oracle and Horatius visit the Borghese Gallery, prompting a series of confessions.

She’s fairly certain he’ll take them all in stride. This is, after all, Horatius: a thoughtful, steady, compassionate Stoic. But even if he doesn’t, there’s no avoiding the conversation. She, too, has her principles. And she will not hold him the way Pluto held Proserpina. She will not be so blindly desperate to keep him that she does him wrong.

A vignette from the week in Rome.

    Summary

Horatius is a man well-equipped to handle adversity. He learned long ago that the world is a harsh place, and he has no expectations otherwise. Happiness doesn't come from the external, but from the internal: from cultivating virtue, from doing what is just, from the discernment of what is and isn't in one's control, from moderation and courage and perspective. He knows how to find contentment. How to reconcile with fate.

The problem is, he keeps getting his fate wrong.

But in fairness, mortals can't be expected to anticipate the intervention of gods and oracles - especially when the oracle involved defies all definition.

AKA: How Horatius comes to ask a woman he's met only twice to be with him. Companion piece to 'Finis Vitae Sed Non Amoris.'

    Summary

She wonders which god is responsible for this sick joke - she's fallen for a (loyal, infuriating, principled, dedicated, wonderful) man who will never remember her, who just so happened to die two thousand years before she was born, and who will have been dead again for two thousand years if she ever escapes this hell.

Shakespeare’s Juliet has got nothing on her: this is some seriously messed up star-crossed something or other. But if Pluto can lock hundreds of people away under threat of being gilded if a single person sins, whatever the hell is happening - or, more accurately, not happening - between her and Horatius easily sounds like something a god would dream up.

But Horatius has taught her how to reconcile with fate. He has taught her not to fear her own love. And he has taught her that love means being willing to let go just as much as it means desiring to hold close.
