Summary
In the end, it was nothing but a coincidence, but a coincidence that would change the course of their lives as a family, even if Sergeant Fred Thursday did not know it then. At first, the call had not sounded like much.
And then, he found them.
A woman – Constance Morse, he assumed – lying on the floor; he knew from one look at her face that all hope was lost.
Which would mean that he ought to leave and call it in, but –
There was a boy, sitting by her, holding her hand. He was looking at Fred with eyes much too big and too knowing.

Summary
Morse looks worse and worse.
Now, that’s sadly not a new development. Fred should know. Wasn’t he – well, yes, - he’s been a bit morose and downtrodden from the first, but deep down, he always assumed that would get better once he settles down to being back in Oxford, realizes he has a place here –
Only that hasn’t happened yet.
And Fred is starting to worry that it never will.Series

Summary
“Don’t- I…” Morse groaned from his place next to the wall. Even in the dim light, Max could see a gentle trickle of blood from where Morse’s brow had collided with the wall. Morse raised a shaking hand to his now wet forehead. “My head…”
“Yes, you’ve hit your head,” Max said as he crouched, wary of getting too close, given Morse’s previous reaction to his touch. “How about I take you to the lab and stitch you up, hm? Then I’ll give you a lift home.”
After Dr DeBryn finds Morse injured and disorientated by the side of a road in the dead of night, the two of them struggle to retrace Morse's steps to uncover what had happened to him that night.
How can Morse investigate what happened to him when there are parts of it that he can't even bear to verbalise?

Joanie had declared that it was too hot to do anything but lie around, but that was boring. And it wasn’t as if she was doing that – she’d just much rather be on her own than play with Sammy, which was unfair.

Summary
Jakes drew himself up to his full height and took a threatening step forward, one hand clutching the cigarette too tightly, and the other resting on his cutlass. If anything, this only spurred the brat on further.
"Go ahead" Morse said, gesturing at the weapon, "Let's see how well that works out for you".
He took a deep breath, tried to block out unhelpful thoughts of stormy sea eyes, and forced himself to remain somewhat calm.
"The second we reach land, you're off my ship!"
"The second we see land, I’ll swim!"Or, the one where everyone's a pirate.

Summary
"In the end it was the rain that finally woke him up. First only softly dripping on his face, then falling harder, as if the weather noticed he wouldn’t wake by the soft pour only. He surely couldn’t remember falling asleep somewhere outside. He couldn’t really remember anything at all actually."
Morse finds himself lying injured in an alleyway. Will he be able to get home?

Summary
It was Win who suggested it, of course. Fred himself never would have – later, he would be rather ashamed of it, but old habits died hard, and he and simply never thought of it; and furthermore, he was sure that Morse hadn’t either, although that really was far from a point in his favor, since if there was a way to make things complicated, Morse was sure to find it…

“It won’t fit.”
“It will.”
“Endeavour Morse, have you ever had a Christmas tree in that house?”
“…no…”
“Do you remember what it was like getting the piano through the doorways? You nearly had a litter of kittens, worrying so much.”
“It fit,” Morse shrugs, jamming his hands in his pockets against the cold, trying to remember if he left his gloves at home or inside the Mini. He’s been out of sorts all afternoon: Christmas, and the associated tree- and present- shopping has never been comfortable for him. He’s starting to regret not planning a holiday away like last year.

Summary
It really was just as she had told Fred – she had so little to do now that the children were out of the house; it had been a relief when Joan had called, of course it had, but still, there was only so much cleaning one could undertake before one started to feel trapped.
