For a fleeting moment, he thought an awful thought. Death would have been kinder. His dearest friend, the only person to show him unconditional care, to accept him completely, to even come close to understanding Erik and still choosing to believe he was a good person. Or rather that he could be a good person. Now he’d taken everything from him.
The bullet hits the top of Charles' spine, and Erik sees he is dying and doesn't just abandon him and leave him for dead in the sand BECAUSE WHAT KIND OF PERSON WOULD DO THAT??? Lots of Charles blaming himself and taking hits left, right and centre as long as everyone else is okay even though he's clearly not.

Charles knew, from the moment he laid eyes on Erik- well. Not quite.
Charles knows when they are half-way across the country, driving and dining on the CIA’s dime.
Holed up and sweating in some nameless bar in Arizona, three beers deep, in the midst of one of Charles’ raunchier Oxford anecdotes, Erik laughs. Really laughs, a warm and bellowing thing, the tail end swallowed with the dregs of his drink. The entire performance shakes Charles from the story, he stutters, tapers off. It doesn’t matter, the story doesn’t matter, not when Erik is laughing and ordering them both another drink. Charles is utterly, woefully, transfixed.
It is in this moment that Charles knows he has fallen hopelessly in love with Erik Lensherr.

Several experiments were born there, and many children were kidnapped. The laboratory continues its secret research, without the population of Hawkins realizing the magnitude of the tests and experiments being carried out. Experiments in telekinesis and mind control are ongoing, with Dr. Martin Brenner and other scientists at the helm. The first four issues were boys and girls who were kidnapped and experimented on, while 005 to 016 were born inside the laboratory.
