Summary
Dean knows exactly why he’d pulled Cas out of the Empty. It’s not charity. It’s selfishness. He’d made Cas lose his paradise, the version of life the Empty had created for him with his mirage of Dean, just because Dean was too scared to be alone. Dean had promised Cas that he’d pretend for him. He’d said he’d do whatever Cas needed to be as happy here as he’d been in the Empty’s reality. But Dean doesn’t even know how to be the person Cas thinks he is.
Either Cas is lying, or his standards are impossibly low. Cas apparently thought it’d be enough for him just to be near Dean. But that’s not what love should be. It should want something back. Dean’s own feelings are irrelevant. He wants Cas, wants to be someone who deserves him. He can’t have him. He can’t construct a monologue about his reasons for loving Cas like Cas had done for him. He’s pretty sure that holding Cas’s hand would make him combust, after so long subsisting on scraps of shoulder-pats and Cas only touching him to heal him.

To tie up the loose ends of a hunt, Dean is forced to go undercover and visit Brock Pleasure Ranch, a horrifying establishment that markets its inhabitants to people with ‘monstrous’ tastes.
It should have been a simple thing, to persuade a mer to give him a few scales for a spell. All part of the usual Winchester byline: saving people, hunting things.
But Castiel is far less of a ‘thing’ than Dean expected. He might not be human, but he’s definitely a person.
And that means he needs saving, too.

Summary
Based on a question I received about how I would bring Supernatural back, I decided to write my version of the premiere episode of the new Supernatural.
In my version, the series finale never happened, and after Jack becomes the new God, Dean is despondent over Castiel's absence and decides to find a way into The Empty to bring him back.
I decided to write this like a teleplay, and hopefully, I've gotten the formatting all right, but I'm not going to stress about it. I originally wrote this in Final Draft, exported it to Word, and then imported it here - so be warned. Hopefully, the formatting isn't too wonky.

Castiel's death hits Dean with a finality that leaves him drowning. Drowning in grief, in regret, in self-loathing, in heartbreak, in liquor. So when he stumbles across Lilly Sunder's notes on angels and, subsequently, a passage mentioning a gate to opening the Empty, he is determined to get Cas back.
No matter the cost.
Three weeks after Cas' return from the Empty, he is slowly healing from what the spell to retrieve him took. Three weeks after Cas' return, omens of angels and demons are scattered around the country. Three weeks after Cas' return, the Empty is bleeding.
Dean swore he would get Cas back no matter the cost. And he has, at the cost of endangering the balance of life and the afterlives. Dean has learned from dying and being the one left behind that it is easy to die for someone, but it is much harder to face the costs of surviving alongside them.
Even so, this time, Dean will not watch Cas die. And Cas has not and will not ever allow the same.

Dean wants to crawl inside that low rumble of a voice and curl up there forever. Delirious, he says, “Yes.”
Then Cas says, “You kissed me.”
Dean swallows. “And?”

Cas thinks Dean is offering to sleep with him out of the goodness of his heart, or so Cas won't leave. Dean is trying to be less of a dick and ends up crying all the time. Cas just wants Dean to let him be the big spoon. They get to heal and be in love.
