Thorin stared, dumbstruck. The space used to contain gold and gems and riches beyond measure, the legacy of his people. He lurched out onto the walkway, unable to tear his eyes away from the piles and piles and piles of…
He stood stock still, frozen with shock, for a long moment.
Are those…handkerchiefs?

It turns out that treating your son like garbage for fourteen years because you preferred his more famous brother is pretty damn low. And pretty damn stupid when he turns out to have been the Chosen One after all. What's more? His twin isn't too impressed with you, either.

Lily Evans got described by many adjectives: vivacious, charming, bright, natural, talented, brave, funny, witty, kind, popular...Truly, she was an exceptional witch who for some reason left behind her a trail of deeply troubled individuals.
Answer to the question: What would change in the story if Lily Evans had been born a sociopath is: not necessarily anything. -

"Fuck," said Severus, with feeling.

One of the best Snape-raises-Harry fics I've ever read. Despite (grudgingly) coming to love Harry, Snape remains incredibly Snape the whole way through, and it was both endearing and tore my heart out.

Bookmarker's Notes
Remarks: "This is going to be a hard one to beat. The author was just really, really skilled. The way they maintained tension? Perfect. Characterization? On point, and in some places, even more fully-developed than canon without feeling different. Description? Just enough to get a picture without excess words getting in the way. And they way they made Lucius the main antagonist of the story was masterful. I wouldn't have guessed how significant his role was, at first. I assumed he was a side-plot. And just when I thought he didn't matter anymore he sprung back up, more dangerous than before. Honestly, it just hits all the marks of an amazingly well-written story. It's really hard to find something like that anywhere even in published novels."
Review left on ff.net: "This story is a new favorite. I've spent the last two days binging it in every moment I can. The ups and downs have been so intense, I feel like I've been on a roller coaster! I'm incredibly impressed at your ability to color the narrative with either Harry or Snape's pov, and not just dialogue (which would have been impressive on it's own!). It's also incredibly satisfying to read a fic where Harry and Snape find that peace as father and son without either of them basically morphing into another person. You've done so well with this fic in every area I can think of: characterization, dialogue, description, plot, tension, pacing. The way you wrote the conflict between Lucius Malfoy & Bellatrix with Snape & Harry was masterful. Truly, this fic didn't lack anything for not making Voldemort the main antagonist. I couldn't have even predicted that Malfoy was going to be the main problem at the beginning of this fic, or even when he made his first appearance - so it was a delightful surprise when I realized his influence on the story's narrative was only growing nastier and nastier."

Bookmarker's Notes
Snape is a slave owned by the Malfoys. No one at Hogwarts knew of his status, as it was seen as uncouth by the Malfoys to have a slave they owned being educated (even though they wanted him trained in Potions). When the Marauders hang Snape upside-down and take his pants down, it exposes the Malfoy family brand on Snape's skin and, consequentially, his status to the school. The Malfoys pulled Snape - now a worthless slave - from school. James buys Snape from them in an effort to make things right, but he has no idea what he's getting himself into and what Snape has endured.
This story is about Snape's world getting turned upside-down as he realizes that there are some people in the world who aren't out to hurt him - and that his new master and his family might be some of them. It's just as much about James realizing, through many teen-aged mistakes, what it means to be responsible for someone who can't help themselves. -

Summary
“But we aren’t done talking about you, Harry! What about your date? How did you meet Hermione?”
A wicked recklessness seized Harry. “Hermione and I met at school when we were both eleven,” he said lightly.
His words had an instant response from his aunt and uncle. Petunia gave a chirp of surprise and Vernon ground his teeth so hard Harry heard the crack across the table. The action was not lost on Yvonne, who looked between them in confusion. Dudley’s eyes were wide with panic, and he shook his head infinitesimally.
“But how could you meet at school?” Yvonne asked cautiously. “St. Brutus’s is–”
“A school for incurably criminal boys,” Harry finished. “I guess that means I never actually went to St. Brutus’s.”

Vernon and Petunia are irredeemable, but Dudley isn't - and his girlfriend is a wonderful, funny influence as well. Very satisfying and ultimately heart-warming.
