Nami. Thinking her name outright like that made Zoro’s brow knit, and the uncomfortable feeling in his gut churn. Zoro didn’t understand why her image was suddenly swimming in his mind’s eye, her choppy orange hair and carefree smile, like the sweet nectarines she loved so much. Nami was his crewmate, their navigator, a friend. Often, during their time as crewmates, he felt aggravation and annoyance towards her, certainly more so than did Sanji, Usopp, or even Luffy. There were definitely times when he did feel closer to her than usual, but that felt more protective and brotherly, and the feeling usually faded away when imminent danger subsided, and things went back to normal. Fool of a Took seemed to be the enduring muttered mantra of the Fellowship, at least where Gandalf was concerned. It was entirely possible that the others thought it in their hearts– certainly not his fellow hobbits, but perhaps the Men that were sworn to follow Frodo into fire and flames, the grumbling dwarf, and the strange elf who spoke rarely and blinked even less. Pippin tried not to let it prick his heart: he knew this quest was something far beyond his understanding of the world, knew that truly realizing it would warp his brain in ways that could not be undone, knew that, after all, he was just a simple hobbit who had quite literally stumbled into saving the world. He could quell the pinpricks with those thoughts.
Before Moria, of course. Before knocking the helmet down the well. Before the balrog.
(In which Legolas has a bad time, Pippin has even worse time, and the fellowship finally gets around to talking about the balrog incident, though not before Legolas and Pippin run into trouble in the woods.)

The breath was knocked out of her as she collided with one of the trees. She gasped for air as she slid down the trunk. Chunks of metal had embedded themselves in her arm. Her blades had shattered when they hit the tree, and the shrapnel had cut into her skin. Attempting to activate her ODM gear, tears started to fall down her face. No gas. This was it. This was how she was going to die. Alone.
Black spots danced in her vision. She probably had a concussion. A laugh escaped her lips.
