Technoblade relished in the routine that retirement gave him, found solace and a quiet comfort he hadn’t been able to experience in a long time; the monotony behind caring for the different animals on his farm, the repetitive motions of tilling and tending to the land. Something about it all soothed any worries or tenseness he could possibly have about things going on in this forsaken server.
The fact that Phil chose to live out here with him was just a bonus.
And okay, sure, maybe Techno could attribute the extra calm and contentedness he felt to the avian. But surely, he wasn't the source of all of it.
…Right?
Okay, so maybe Phil was more integral to the routine than Techno let on. Sue him.

He stopped for a few seconds and admired the shadows passing through the windows, showing him a reality so different from his own, full of color, light, beautiful, and loud sounds. He wished he had that.
But alas, he wasn't there for that. He was there for other things. He had other plans and, especially, a gift to give.

Phil always thought working at a shelter would give him a lot of heartwarming stories about people finding their newest family member. That he'd get to hang pictures on the wall of little kids with big smiles and small puppies.
Instead, it's mostly wrestling dogs into baths and getting pissed on by angry cats, and doing vibe checks of everyone who walks in. He’s had enough dogs coming in from fighting rings at this point that he doesn’t want to adopt one out into that life on accident. He’s had a few people who sent up enough red flags that he refused an adoption, and he expects there will be more.
Or: Phil is surprised when Techno wants a tiny kitten, and definitely doesn't intend to fall in love with him over it.

A hand finds his hair and Techno’s chest starts to rumble with a hum. “How about we get some tea? See if we can calm you down,” Techno suggests. Then immediately sighs. “I guess I can take care of Wil while you sleep in, but he’s gonna complain about his toast.”
Phil wishes he could laugh. Instead he just waves his hand. “I can still make his toast. I don’t think I’m gonna be sleepin’ much. Also he’s fuckin’ ten, he can really make his own toast,” he points out.
“You still make it,” Techno points out.
