    Summary

The trip to the safehouse took over seven hours – four and a half hours spent on a train from London to Edinburgh, twenty minutes spent in Waverly waiting for the next train, forty-five minutes spent traveling from Edinburgh to Stirling, nearly an hour huddling under a cold and drippy bus stop in Stirling, then a final forty-five minute bus ride to the small and unassuming town where Basira thought they might be safe – and Jon did not sleep for a single minute of it.

He couldn’t, even if he’d wanted to. His nerves were utterly frayed. It felt as though his body had been stuck in fight-or-flight mode from the moment he’d found Martin’s tape, and nothing – not the gentle rocking of the train, not the soothing silence of the late-night air, not the fact that Martin was curled into the seat beside him, hand still loosely wrapped around Jon’s even while he slept – could convince his body that the danger had passed.

    Summary

“...Sure,” Martin replied glumly. He wondered if this is how all those french people felt, back in the days of guillotines. “Huh— How do you think I should introduce myself to this Archivist, anyway? They are going to be my boss, technically speaking, so I suppose I can at least try to make a good first impression…?”

The look Tim and Sasha shared was… Certainly something.

“I don’t think introductions will really be required,” she said, delicately.

“Right. Ok. Sure. Do you know what their name is? I ought to at least know that, right?” Martin pressed on, voice tinted by desperation. “Mr. Bouchard wouldn’t say—”

Again with the look. Martin was going to scream.

“Don’t you worry about that, bud,” Tim said with a very forced, nervous little grin. “The Archivist is just The Archivist. Just get in there and… Godspeed?”

    ----

Moved by desperation, Martin accepts a job he's perfectly aware is bad news, but maybe... It won't be as such for long.

    Summary

A remix of Act 2 in which Gale gets more of a character arc resolution.

    “Gods damn it Gale!”
Astarion leaps over him. The guard, poised to land an entirely excessive final blow to Gale’s skull, topples backwards with a knife in his gut. The second pierces his neck, sending him crashing to the ground. Astarion yanks his blades back, and drops to his knees beside Gale.
“Oh no no no, you are not dying on me now.”
Gale attempts to express something, but it comes out as a gurgle of bloody bubbles. The world swings to the side, black and spinning.
“I swear, if it turns out I did just watch you spend the last of your magic sending your cat back to safety instead of saving your own damn skin-”
The threat remains unfinished. A healing potion trickles between Gale’s lips.
“Tressym,” Gale says, when he can finally trust his voice.
Astarion is still crouched over him, cheeks flushed, sweat running down his brow and someone else’s blood smeared across his cheek. Gale has the sudden urge to kiss him.
    “What?”
    “She’s a tressym. Not a cat.”
Astarion makes a noise of such furious, pained exasperation that Gale half expects the dagger to end up in his neck next.
