Neither of them expect to see Joel or Ellie again. If they make it to the Fireflies alive, then she figures Ellie will stay with the Fireflies. They’ll probably want to keep her close and safe while they study whatever makes her immune, and probably after, too. As for Joel, well, she’s sure he’ll disappear again. It’s what he does best.
Which is why it’s such a surprise when they show up the next spring.
