Summary
After a Russian bomb in Ukraine ends combat photographer Bucky Barnes’ career several decades ahead of schedule, he returns to the lake house he hasn’t visited since his parents died to put the pieces back together over the long, lonely winter. He’s got no idea what his life is supposed to look like now that he’s not constantly on the move and facing danger every day, but an unexpected friendship with his elderly neighbor—and then her astronaut son—leads to the kind of connection he never thought he’d get to have.

“Alien…aphrodisiac.” James blinks and takes a few deep breaths, absorbing the information to scratch his head over later. Steve’s the priority now. “At least tell me he didn’t leap into the path of the alien whatever.”
The Widow laughs. It’s half for show, James knows, but he thinks he can see genuine amusement in her cool green eyes. Steve’s better at reading her, but Steve’s apparently busy rubbing one out in the bathroom.
“Not this time,” she says. “It’s not a weapon. One of the scientists grabbed the first thing they could in a panic. Steve was the only one in the room with them and got a faceful of blue dust. The effects took a couple of hours to show.”
“And the scientist who used it?”
“Was trying to fuck a wall, last I saw.”
James grimaces.
“It’s not very dignified,” the Widow adds, noting his expression. “Like I said, either the serum’s handling the worst of it, or Steve’s real superpower is his moral compass.”

He met Natasha at the bus stop.
“Tin Man,” she said with her trademark half smile.
“Scary Spice,” he returned.
Another beat passed before they were locked in a tight embrace. Tony pressed a kiss to Nat’s temple and they both let the tears gather for a few minutes.
“He’s dead?” Nat whispered through tears.
“Yeah, chicken,” Tony returned. “We won.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Same reason you are,” Tony replied as he pulled away from the hug, but grasped her hand and squeezed. “Winning required it.”
&&&&&
Nat & Tony meet at a bus stop in the afterlife and take a ride through heaven and hell.
Eventually, everyone else does too.
