Hanahaki Disease is a disease triggered by unrequited or one-sided love.
The primary symptom is the afflicted person coughing up flower petals or even entire flowers. The severity of the disease and the quantity of flowers coughed up usually increase as the unrequited love persists and intensifies.
The disease is often described as painful, with the growth of flowers in the lungs and respiratory system leading to discomfort and difficulty breathingThe most common "cure" is for the person whose love is unrequited to have their feelings returned romantically. Another cure sometimes depicted is surgery to remove the flowers. However, this often comes with the consequence of also removing the individual's romantic feelings for their crush.

Something on his face dripped down from the ridge of his eyebrow to his cheek; he wasn’t sure if it was blood or sweat. His eyes slid back down towards the body at his feet.
Subong was suffocating. His cross was empty—it was never empty—and he’d just seen a girl whose hands were shaking get shot in the forehead. His own were beginning to tremble as his shock wore off; if he didn’t pop a pill beforehand, adrenaline had always made him shaky. He took a stuttering breath.
