Philza, the offworlder, speaks Niki’s mother tongue like he’s addressing a lover. She hasn’t heard her language spoken like this — the crooning low tones of closespeak, the blunt intimate you Niki’s own father had pressed into the crown of her forehead when she was born — since she cast off for the Overworlds with light eyes and a lighter pack, and it almost makes her feel violent. Trapped in the shell of her soft pink skin — too fleshy, too vascularised, like the pink tissue beneath a scab picked before it’s ready. She blinks, lowers her eyes, and answers under her breath in the appropriate register.
