She didn’t have anything to protect herself, to keep her safe, to fight back — Not that she would have. Because this was R she was talking about! surely, surely, there was a part of her that cared, a part of her who didn’t want to do this, who didn’t want to chase her.
But right now she found that a bit difficult to believe.
Because R was chasing her. R was chasing her with a sword, with the intent to kill. And she didn’t know why.

Summary
“If anything happens, and we get corrupted, please, know that I love you, Shrub.” Katherine murmured. She knew Shrub was unconscious, that she couldn’t hear her, but she felt the need to say it. Maybe it was the red, corrupt spores that danced through the air and made her consciousness slowly fade, or the fact that her friends hadn’t come to save them yet, but she had to make sure Shrub knew it, she *had* to say ‘I love you’.
Katherine’s legs buckled where she knelt, her body was giving up on her, and she collapsed to the cold, hard, stone floor. Her brain screamed at her to stay awake but it felt distant, *everything* felt distant. For the first time since Xornoth had made himself known, Katherine wondered what it felt like to be corrupted; would she hurt people? Would she remember any of it?

As the Secret Keeper stares him down, Grian announces, “I have an unfortunate update.”
The sixteen other players around him murmur nervously. Grian glances to his left and spots Jimmy preening his wings over and over. Behind him, Gem is standing close to Pearl with a protective expression on her face. Grian sighs. None of them will want to hear this. “We’re not getting a break day tomorrow.”
“What?” Martyn snaps. Grian can see the alarm in Martyn’s eyes, no matter how hard he tries to mask it with anger.
“They’re interested in seeing what the next session will look like with a shorter rest period. Something about nerves and reaction time. It shouldn’t be much of a–“
“They think we’re not killing each other fast enough.”
It takes everyone a moment to realize it’s Cleo who’s spoken. It takes Cleo even longer. “Don’t they?” she mutters once she’s found her voice again.
Grian studies the ground. “I did get that sense, yes.”
