Or, the apocalypse only took place in the southeast and after a cure was released, Carl survived, and ended up living and going to school in California. The whole world was aware of the apocalypse, however it only affected the southeast. Everything else is canon except for the fact that Carl survives due to the cure.
Nobody knows where Carl Grimes came from, he’s a mystery to his class and school, but soon his peers start to piece everything together and realise he’s one of the survivors.
