They had just escaped hell. The five of them survived the hardest almost 10 hours of their lives. Their eyes saw what a human should never let their eyes see. They lost what no one from their age should ever lose. They experience what no sane human could ever be able to handle. They felt what no one should ever feel.
But they escaped. They escaped and now they are alive. Bruised, traumatized, exhausted, but whole and alive.
Only to be told they, in fact, didn’t escape.
Or, Benito, Jeffrey, Luis, Diego, and Emi need to act as a happy, functional middle-class normal family in a two-story house in Switzerland while they wait for the cure for their infection.
It should be easy, to start over in another country with the ones that saved your life.

“You’re not real,” Viktor repeated, closing his eyes. Even with the knowledge that this was a dream, the gentle touch unraveled him. There was an impact crater where his heart should be.
The calloused pad of Jayce's thumb found the corner of Viktor’s mouth. “All right. I’ll bite – what’s your evidence for this hypothesis?”

She had sat patiently, arms wrapped around his middle under their favorite tree, while he struggled to find the words to explain why he wasn’t her daughter. She had hummed softly as if she understood while brushing a stray hair from his forehead. “I love you, Zuko.” She had murmured softly just for him. “Please don’t tell anyone else, okay? It’ll be our secret. Promise me.”
He remembers how soft she touched him; how gentle she had been as she waited for him to promise to hide himself. He was still young but he understood mother’s promises were always to protect him, especially when they hurt.
“I promise.”
