He wouldn’t be sitting here with that relaxed face. (Well, relaxed by his standards.) Like nothing in particular is bothering him. He takes it all so seriously that I’m positive that if he wasn’t in love, he would set out to fall in love just because of one day! So, he must have someone. And because he’s sitting there, like any other day, it must mean that person goes to our school.

Takao gets changed in a blur before he takes off, bare-footed, and simply runs. He overtakes two of Seirin’s second year players, their six and seven, and hardly notices them in time to spare a friendly wave as he tears across the beach with his calves on fire and his breath burning in his chest. He considers how really excellent it would be if a shark somehow managed to flop up onto the shore and just ate him. That would be ideal right about now.
