Summary
It sucked that Tim couldn't trust his family. They had either been his abusers or bystanders, but even when he tried to take himself off their hands, they clung to him like a sticky residue. Trapped, he felt like a mouse beneath a cat's paw, and he knew the only escape would be a clean-cut break with no room for interpretion.
Somehow, they made room for interpretation.
“Bruce,” Tim rasped, his discarded Red Robin suit a thousand pound weight in his hands, clean and ready to go in its case. “You don’t even *like* me.”
The truth dangled between them like a spider’s web clinging to separate walls.To no one’s shock, Batman said nothing. The only sounds in the cave were the shuffling of bats and Tim’s bike rumbling softly at the entrance, waiting patiently for him to make his escape.

Maybe this is a setup to a bad joke: A desperate CEO calls the suicide hotline, but they don’t pick up. How funny— right? Right??

Death had been a part of his life for as long as Tim can remember.
He was introduced to the concept at three, when he found his mom -ironically also in a bathtub, just like this one- without a pulse.
Or: Tim is fighting a battle against himself. He’s losing.

Summary
The first inkling they get that something is horribly wrong is the morning after a grueling patrol. Cassandra doesn't wake up. Her vitals show she's fine but she's unresponsive to any attempt to rouse her. By the time Bruce has called the doctors in, there are reports everywhere. People all over the world aren't waking up.
It's the first time in a long time Bruce feels actual fear. He feels it creeping up from his gut and sees it in the way his hands faintly shake as he sits by her bedside and waits.
