Confused, Bob blinked at him. He hadn’t expected the man to address him unless it was absolutely necessary, but there was nobody else in the room he could be speaking to. Also, he didn’t understand the question.
“What suitcase?” He said, following up immediately in case he sounded like an idiot: “I didn’t bring a suitcase.”
John stared at him as if he had announced he had flown here directly from Mars.
“This is a six-week programme.” He said, slowly, in case Bob didn’t understand, “There’s no way you managed to fit six weeks’ worth of clothes into that thing.”
Bob shrugged.

Summary
Something clawed him out of unconsciousness, dragging him up through the dark waters of sleep. At first, it was just sound. Faint, broken, distressed. Then breathing, too fast and too shallow to be normal.
Bob.
John shot upright like a spring, muscles locking into place. Bob’s sleep wasn’t peaceful; it was jagged and chaotic, his body twitching, small noises escaping his lips. Whimpers. Choked gasps. Cries that stabbed into John’s chest sharper than any blade ever could.
He reached out.
