Summary
Tommy shook hands with Eddie before turning to Buck, who he’d hear plenty of stories about over the years. Howie had once described him as a human golden retriever and Tommy had to admit, the man wasn’t wrong. His blonde curls, bright blue eyes, and the way he was practically bouncing back and forth on the tarmac all distinctly reminded Tommy of a puppy.
“I’m um– Evan,” Evan introduced himself, his hand shooting out to shake Tommy’s eagerly. “Evan Buckley.”
It was probably just his eyes. Tommy had always been a sucker for blue eyes.
“Tommy Kinard,” he replied, clasping his hand around Evan’s own.

Summary
"People aren’t psychic Buck," said Athena. "If you want them to know what you don’t like you have to tell them. With your words.”
Buck looked around his friends, all of whom were making faces of regretful agreement. “Why are you attacking me like this? I was the one who got broken up with. You’re supposed to be on my side.”
Athena sighed before stepping forward to rest her hands on Buck’s shoulders. “I am sweetheart… but it’s Bobby who’s your pseudo father. I don’t have to be nice about it.”
*****
Five months after breaking up with Tommy, the 118 has a call that inspires his firefamily to finally confront Buck with his own self-sabotaging behaviours. After a heart-to-heart with Bobby, Buck realises he just can't bring himself to hate Tommy. Not even a little. Not even at all.

Summary
If the only reason he isn’t rotting in the ruins of a department store in Encino is because of the sense of duty of a rookie he’s tormented from the moment they met, then Tommy shouldn’t be here right now.
Statistically, karmically, cosmically, like he’s always known in the back of his mind, Tommy was never supposed to make it out of that mall. An insignificant man dying in an insignificant place—his fate finally unfurled. Any other American man burned and buried in the belly of any other American strip mall, the two of them indiscernible archetypes of their kind.

Tommy’s life has been a horror movie, but loving Evan is like a romantic comedy.
