“Rook.” Lucanis said, his voice sincere and frustrated. “I am asking you, please, do not try to honeypot the elven god of lies, treachery, and rebellion.”

“Depending on the story,” Rook muttered mulishly.

Lucanis put his head in his hands.

    Summary

“Blood magic?” Dread pulls Rook’s heart into her guts with an icy fist. Is this why the taste of blood still lingers, a coppery pepper tang in the back of her throat?

The accusation seems to summon the Dread Wolf from his shadowy enclave and he steps forward, chin lifted in affront. “Firstly, I abhor the use of blood magic,” he announces. “Secondly, had I the power to control you, I would already have used it.”

He…can’t be serious, can he? Rook squints at Solas in genuine bafflement.

“Sorry, just to be clear,” she begins, holding up a staying hand. “That was a stirring declaration of your hatred for blood magic that included—and please, stop me if I'm wrong—admitting that you would not hesitate to use it?”

Solas doesn’t respond, merely scowls and vanishes once more.

“I see,” Rook mutters, mostly to herself though she’s positive he can hear her. “Well, perhaps not the most compelling of arguments.”

    or

In which Rook makes the objectively questionable decision to fall for her narrative foil, and somehow saves Thedas from utter destruction along the way.

At last, when she was tempted to speak, he rounded on her. "Control yourself." His tone was sharp, his gaze cutting.

"How did you know I was-"

“The greater Fade is malleable. This prison- our prison- is no different. The landscape and its inhabitants conform to your emotions and your desires whether you will it consciously or not. So, I will warn you again. You must control yourself.”

She struggled to her feet and grit her teeth against the unsteady wobble of her knees.

“And…” He hesitated briefly. “For whatever petty consolation it’s worth, I was also wrong about you.”

In which a Dalish Rook and the Dread Wolf himself are forced to navigate the perils of being the world's shittiest room mates.

    Summary

Rowan sits bolt upright, blood rushing to her brain, and nearly loses consciousness again.

    “Varric?”

She looks around. She’s not in Minrathous. She’s not in the Lighthouse. She’s in a small wooden hut, the Frostback chill seeping in through the thick pine walls and competing for dominance with the heat of the fire crackling in the fireplace.

She’s in Haven. 9:41 Dragon. She traveled through space and time, arriving not at Arlathan before Solas’s ritual, but at the Ferelden Conclave, just to be blown up, hurtled back into the Fade she’d so recently escaped from and then out again, now marked by god magic.

    Fuck.

When Rook discovers that time travel exists - and her friend Dorian helped pioneer it - she begs him for a favor: send her back to the ritual so she might save her mentor and friend, Varric, from Fen'Harel's knife. Dorian sends her back, all right - eleven years back, to the moment everything went to hell and the Herald of Andraste was born.
