Josh shakes his head, his lungs aching. He curls his fingers into the front of Tyler's shirt. "They made me," he says again, and again. "They made me. I was a person and then I..." He swallows down a lump of emotion, a dry sob. "And then I wasn't."

Summary
After the events of the past two years, Tyler has been left altered in a way none of the rebels completely understand. He says there's a voice in his head, one that claims to be from another world, freed after the destruction of Nico's vials. It also claims it has friends, and if they aren't freed as well, then the reign of the bishops will never end.
The other banditos--including Josh, who is still recovering from being forced to bond with Lisden's vials--have to decide whether or not they believe Tyler's story. In the wake of the great fire, they will travel through Trench, seeking answers as to how Dema was really formed, and how to destroy it once and for all.

Summary
Tyler couldn’t even remember when or how they got to that point, it just came natural to him, like a divine force guiding his hands. It was unspoken yet mutually agreed upon.
He thought that, just maybe, this kind of closeness was inevitable considering the space they had no option but to share. Maybe it was the thrill, just a need to release it. Or the loneliness, or just an odd manifestation of the need to convey overwhelming (platonic) love for one another.
He’d try to find any reason for it other than he wanted it.
