Summary
For one brilliant, terrifying moment, the world cracks open.
A bolt of lightning splits the dark skies in half, followed closely by a crack of thunder so deafening, so booming, that Rosamund Dashwood almost believes the end times Mr. Betham preached about so often are upon her.
A burning scent laces the air as the world darkens again. Rain falls in heavy sheets, but Rosamund barely notices. She is already drenched to the bone. She leans against the rough bark of a nearby tree, waiting for her eyes to readjust to the night and trying to catch her breath.
The seconds tick by agonizingly slowly, but soon enough the shapes of the trees etch shadows of themselves into the darker sky beyond and she resumes her journey down the path. Rain plasters her hair to her head and water sloshes in her boots as she works herself back up to a jog, moving too quickly to be proper, but she doesn’t care. If she doesn’t get to Dr. Knightley’s house in time… Well, she can’t bear to think of the consequences.
