Summary
Shanks thinks, I was named a whaler, and a whaler is what I'll die. Family left at home - friends too, tumultuous partings aside - he and his men head north to the Arctic Ocean, summer falling away from them and the cold rolling in unseasonably early.
His men look to him for instruction, as they always do; those he's been with for years, those newer, those who have never sailed before. His men, his boys. The Red Force is a fine ship in the fleet, even if not the most famous - the wind in her sails and the coal in her engines take her out to sea, the noise of the crowd slowly fading away into the distance, to be replaced by the calls of gulls and the hubbub of a working crew.
"Away we go," he says under his breath.
"Away we go," he echoes. "To glory, fame, and fortune."
"Amen," Shanks says, and turns away from the shore after he takes his last look at the distant skyline of the city they're leaving behind.
The Red Force and her men are a whaling crew in the Arctic, in the late 19th century.
Famously, nothing bad has ever happened in the Arctic, not to those who believe themselves adequately provisioned and well prepared.

After Loguetown, Shanks runs into the few Whitebeard Pirates who'd been able to attend Roger's execution to pay their respects to their captain's rival. (Their captain's friend.) He sails with them back to the Moby Dick and even after that, until he's seventeen and feels ready to start his own crew.
As all choices do, this changes things.
