Summary
The BRCA2 gene will be discovered in 1995, a year after BRCA1.
But it’s 1988, too early for any of that, too early for gene panels and prophylactic surgeries, too early for hard answers. BRCA1 hasn’t even been discovered yet, let alone its quieter, more elusive sibling. Cancer, in 1988, still feels like a curse more than a code to crack — a roll of the dice rather than a data point.
And Maverick? He’s not thinking about any of that right now. He’s just trying to get his five-year-old into a goddamn pair of swim trunks.
(Or, Maverick needs to have a double mastectomy as a twenty-eight-year-old man. He decides that no one else needs to see it).

“Hey, sorry but this isn’t your friend.”
A picture came through. It was the cowboy again.
“He paid the price of a dance for me to just text you. I’ll admit it is a little odd, but I’m not going to turn down an offer.”
"So you’re a stripper?”
“Dancer.”
“An exotic one.”
There was a pause between responses.
“On the weekends, yes.”
Bradley chuckled weakly.
“And is this outfit a regular thing?”
“That depends...You like it?”
“I’ll admit it makes me want to save a horse.”
--
Bradley Bradshaw has a one time text conversation with a stripper cowboy he'll probably never meet in real life. Little does he know, Jake Seresin has already decided he has fallen in love and won't stop until he's in his arms (a little bit of a Cinderella story if you squint).

Was he just fated to lose everyone he loved? Rooster wondered as he read Mav’s diagnosis over and over, willing the words to change on the page before his eyes. Because losing another of his family to cancer would just be cruel.
But the words didn’t change.
And neither did Mav’s diagnosis.
There was nothing that could be done.

Summary
It’s such a pity, the nurses tell his mother as they hand him over for the first time. Such a pity. His wings are so pretty.
They are pretty — shimmering in the hospital’s artificial lighting, each feather is the kind of iridescent you only ever see in beetle shells or oil-slicked puddles. As a little boy, Jacob would hold them in his lap the best he could, brushing them gently through their spasms, saying they looked just like the scales on Rainbow Fish from his favorite picture book. And they stay pretty.
Always pretty, but never functional.
(Or, sometimes there are winged and Jake is a winged who can't use his wings).

“If something happens—”
“Don’t.”
“No, Bradley, just listen, okay? If something happens, promise me that you’ll be there for Loekte and Njenna, and you’ll let someone be there for you.”
“Nothing’s going to happen to you, Iceland.”
“I know. But still, promise me anyway.”
(In which, Bradley loses a wingman and gains a son — turning into someone pretty familiar).

Summary
“You know what?” He exhales sharply. “You wanna be mad about the things he’s done? The blood on his hands? Fine. Be mad. But don’t you dare act like he had a damn choice.”
He steps forward, getting up close and person to the Iceman. He’s more than a little pissed that the old fucker doesn’t even flinch. “He is mine now. You understand me?” His voice drops, low and lethal. “Mine to protect. Mine to fight for. And I swear to God , if you can’t see past your own guilt long enough to love him the way he deserves —” He points toward the door. “—then leave . Right now.”
Neither of them move.
Jake’s breath was heavy, his body rigid with barely contained rage. “Don’t worry,” he says, voice quiet now, but no less intense. “He’s already spent a lifetime surviving without you.”

Summary
"I would have expected to see you in the cockpit," Payback started, as Jake tried to keep his attention on the radio chatter. Harvard, Yale, and Fritz were up there.
He was not going to take the bait. He was not going to give them that satisfaction.
"Well, maybe the brass finally share our conclusions. That you cannot be trusted up there," Phoenix went on, just as coldly as Payback.
"You finally screwed up enough to be grounded?" Fanboy asked. "Or is it because of Bee's death?"
At the mention of his wingman's callsign, his grip tightened around the pen and clipboard he had in hand. He had heard it all before, the gossip, the accusations, but never from people he had once considered his family.
"I received orders," he answered, stoically, eyes still glued on the radio. "I'm here to teach, to lead you to success. That's it."
"Bagman, the only place you'll lead anyone is an early grave," Rooster stepped in, anger clear as day in his voice.
🛩️ Permanently grounded and wingless, Hangman must team up with Maverick to prepare the Dagger Squad for the suicide mission. Will they be able to set aside their feelings or crash and burn before they even fly that mission?

Summary
It was a mission gone wrong that left Hangman down a leg and with an honorable discharge from active duty. He’s been teaching at Top Gun since then, hoping to keep the next generation of pilots from making the same mistakes he did. He loves teaching, maybe not as much as he loves flying, but still a hell of a lot more than living as a civilian. Six months into the gig, Hangman’s dog tackles the man that moved in next door. Enter Rooster: recently rescued prisoner of war, Hangman’s new teaching partner, and possibly the most frustrating person he’s ever met.

"We oil you up too, make you Miss December, we’ll make millions. “
"Natasha," he said, his voice coming out more as a strangled warning than he intended, his cheeks still burning from the earlier photo. "Not funny."
She sidled closer, her smile widening as she clearly fed off his discomfort. "Oh, come on, Bradshaw," she cooed, her voice sweet with a hint of mockery. "You’ve got the body for it. Those abs would give Seresin a run for his money. And I’d say the calendar would sell out in hours."

Once again, the man doesn't rise to the occasion.

Summary
Gaze wandering to the P-51 once again, drawn to the little plane like a moth to a flame. Pacing around it, putting a hand on it’s side.
“Well, aren’t you the prettiest damn thing, sweetheart?”
Because who was to know that Pete had started talking to the planes because Goose did? Emulating his brother in all but blood, taking confidence in a somewhat odd habit through the ensuing years.
Not noticing the tacky red fingerprints he left on the yellow paint as he hummed a nameless tune, pacing the plane’s perimeter, gauging what whoever owned the plane was up to. Peering into the opened belly of the plane to see the parts missing from the engine, standing on his tiptoes to see from another angle.
Only to be startled by the sound of something shattering behind him.

Summary
“Her twitchy witchy boy shrieks and giggles, his fingers barely brushing the soft green grass from where he hangs upside down.
It breaks her heart like a thing made of glass.
His little voice sings their curse like it’s still a nursery rhyme, lisping along — One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret never to be told.
Rhiannon Seresin knows the real words, has since she was a little girl: One for sorrow, Two for luck, Three for a wedding, Four for death; Five for silver, Six for gold; Seven for a secret never to be told; Eight for Heaven, Nine for Hell, And Ten for The Devil’s own sell.”
— or, Jake Seresin is born a witch.
