    Schroeder could have never imagined this happening years ago, when the very idea of her lips brushing against his had been enough to make him recoil in disgust. He remembered his childish defiance — the way he’d stick his tongue out at her with the kind of brashness that only an eight-year-old boy warding off cooties could muster. He pretended to be above it all, as if he could outrun the feelings he didn’t yet understand.
