He goes to a church to cover his bases. God is a thought that occurs to him almost off-hand when he finally makes the decision, the same way religious thought patterns have followed him throughout the rest of his life. He’s long since given up trying to do anything about it, but still, when he lies, when he steals, when he looks at something with jealousy, a voice in his head whispers, that’s a sin. Just a reminder. Something to brush away and try to ignore.
Different for this one, though. He’d considered the option, and that voice, more panicked than usual, had reminded him, that’s a mortal sin. The Catholic schoolboy that lived in his head could be silenced on most matters, but this one made his child-self afraid. God will hate you for that. God will send you to Hell. So maybe, he’d thought, he ought to pray.

Summary
When Ciri first arrives at Kaer Morhen, Geralt is not father to her. He is destiny, protector—but he is new, and unpredictable. Ciri still dreams at night of running into Eist’s arms, letting him whisper her Skelliger lullabies until her heartbeat calms and she knows she is safe from the dark shapes that haunt her. She still dreams of riding on the saddle behind her grandmother, holding tight to her as she rides past the ominous form of the knight with the black-winged helmet and takes off his plumed head in one swing. In the dream, she can tell that her grandmother takes a savage delight in the act, in destroying what has caused Ciri fear. Ciri holds onto her, braces her hands against the solidity of her grandmother’s breastplate, lays her face against the blood and woodsmoke scent of her Cintran-blue cloak, and feels safe in the savagery.
Geralt is not that for her. Still, he lets her go without speaking about it, does not prod, when she awakes sobbing from her dreams of long-dead comforts.

“It’s where witchers go in the winter,” he tells her, without skipping a beat, and then pauses. “It’s… like a home. You’ll be safe there.”

Summary
He’s thirteen; he barely has stock of regular emotions, much less what washes over him in the next moments. He doesn’t know how to name it. He doesn’t know how to do anything but feel it, overwhelming and wonderful and startling. His god spoke to him. His Highness spoke to him. It’s a revelation.
He feels nauseous. When he starts to cough and feels something in his throat, he’s sure it’s a part of his hurried, makeshift meal, come back to punish him for having enough, for once: instead, when he wobbles to the door of the shrine and spits it out into the mud, he finds that it’s a flower petal. It’s soaked through with bile and then by rain, so it’s more translucent than white, but he knows the shape of the petals like he knows the lines of his palm. (Artist’s intuition.)

Summary
After fleeing all the business with Heaven’s Eye and chasing a formidable distance after Ling Wen and the Brocade Immortal, Xie Lian finally stops. It’s clear that he won’t catch up with them. Ling Wen is too quick, the heavens aren’t responding; he’ll have to think up something else. When it’s decided that they will focus on other matters, he sets Hua Cheng, child-sized and child-shaped, down. To his alarm, his friend immediately collapses into his own form, dressed in black, one palm braced against the ground and another to his chest. His hair falls loose and dark around his face. He doesn’t move for a long moment.
He looks, in a wave of dizzying memory, like… but that’s not reasonable.

The best theory he or Eskel can come up with is that Geralt’s mother, if his hazy memories can be trusted, was some sort of druid, so maybe the second set of Trials woke something long dormant in his blood.
Whatever the reason, at least it’s usually easy to conceal the little twigs that grow out of his head like his newly-white hair; they’re small, and soft, and a witcher’s hair is always full of sticks and leaves and mud anyhow, so they don’t really stand out.
