Surrounding the crossing is a kaleidoscopic array of signs, ads and billboards. Luxury goods, electronics, perfume, food, clothes. And—celebrities, beautiful and bright-faced, holding makeup palettes or bottles of liquor or mysteriously and opaquely frosted jars.
On one of the billboards is a man named Boo Seungkwan.
His billboard is huge, scaling the side of a multistory commercial complex. In it, he holds a container of skin cream. Once in a while, he’ll raise it to his face before lowering it, his expression fresh and radiant. Hansol has been commuting past this billboard every day for the last two months and every day he tries not to look too much at it.

There’s a movie that Xiaoting likes, based on a folk story she heard as a child. In the folk story, the main character is a courtesan, cursed to exile on the moon after swallowing a forbidden pill. In the movie, she’s an astronaut, conscripted to space in the service of advancing scientific progress. Either way, the story is the same. She floats up into space, the blue of the sky fading to black, peering down at the Earth, never to return.
Or: Xiaoting spends her first winter in Seoul, with Chaehyun.

“Worse than last time?” Jayce posits a guess.
“It’s, eh-” Viktor shrugs. Tilts his chin this way and that. A tsk. “Bearable. I’ve endured worse hangovers in college.” he was going for a laugh, but the punchline never truly lands. Instead, Jayce’s thumb rubs softly into the back of his palm, pressing like he wants to idle the muscle mass into something new. It’s such a small thing, whatever this is, and yet it steadies the flow of his blood; the relief of loosening a valve, flicking off a pressure switch. It’s the necessary cracking-open of his breast. Jayce squeezes. Viktor allows himself the luxury of a sigh. “You shouldn’t be here.” he mutters.
Jayce reflexively shakes his head. “I took the day off.”
“We both know that’s-”
“—I could take the week.” he insists, almost a threat, a flicker of that eternal stubbornness coursing through him.
