John pants, supporting himself on the side of the tank. His clothes are sopping wet and clinging to his back, a heavy weight making it hard to keep afloat.
Sharp teeth retract back into pink gums, gold eyes returning to a placid blue and peeking over the water at him. Bob goes from predator to curious creature in the span of seconds, head tilting to the side and blinking.
Whatever the fuck that thing is, John thinks, pressing himself up against the glass, it’s not a mermaid, that’s for goddamn sure.

“You looked scared, John.”
“Well, duh!” He gestures all around them. “Any person with common sense would. We’re on, like, the hundred-something-ith floor, of course I’d be scared as shit to fall from this high up.”
Bob glances up at him, throat clicking. “You can be scared and still want to jump.”

“Describe what you feel,” John orders.
He squeezes his fingers one more time, not holding back and putting his all into feeling the muscle underneath, hard and solid as a rock. It does the trick, bringing the other man’s attention right back on him.
“Your hands. I can feel them on my knees, both of them,” Bob whispers.
“And what do you smell?”
“You,” he murmurs, “all I smell is you.”

Sometimes it takes more than gentle encouragement to pull someone out of their own head. John knows this from experience. It doesn’t mean much until it does.

Bob blinks, and then he’s leaning in, blanket slipping from his shoulders. “You do?” he asks, more than a little curious. “What is it?”
John brings an arm up, flexing it in the air. He pats at his bicep and feels a smug smile tilting up the side of his mouth. “You’re looking at the guy who punched your dad that one time. Wanna see me do it again?”

Usually, Yelena handles Bob when he’s in one of his moods. This time though, and on accident, John needs to pick up the slack. He just didn’t expect to come face-to-face with a little kid.
