They smoked together, once or twice, back in freshman year, before the blond decided cigarettes didn’t cut it for him anymore and he moved on to harder shit, like eating edibles at lunch and rolling joints sooner than any of them. Part of the McCormick lifestyle, Kenny had said, grinning as smoke poured out of the gap between his two front teeth.

Akira was tired. And when he was tired like this—the way he hadn’t been in months—he laid down and stayed down for a day or two. Unless someone or something intervened. That was how it worked—these moments. They ended, or didn’t, but eventually they would fizzle out and Akira would get back up. Be normal again. But this was different than all the other times Akira laid down on his bed and did nothing. This was a moment that lasted hours, where he thought about everything and nothing. But more importantly, a moment where he thought about November, and what would happen in one week.

“My relationship isn’t a mistake, and it isn’t ‘kind of’ fucked,” Dick informs Jason. He moves ever-so-slightly away from Jason, leaning closer into the open air beneath them. They’re about twenty storeys up, maybe more.
Jason is quiet for a moment. Dick imagines his face beneath the helmet—he hates it when people disagree with him. His face becomes flushed, and his jaw gets set in a certain way that’s very reminiscent of Bruce. They never want to admit how similar they are.
Jason says, “I never said anything about it being a mistake.”
(Dick gets into a relationship with someone older than Bruce. For some reason, everyone has an opinion about it.)
