"Ezio!" Tiny fingers tugged on his larger ones. "I can't see anything. Pull me up." It still amused him how this boy of ten could be so demanding. Gian or as Leonardo had now dubbed him, Salaì, looked straight, held against his chest, their focus on the duca and soon to be duchessa of Milano.
"Ezio?" Salaì interrupted when the couple began their vows.
"Shh..."
For the first time Salaì's voice was curious, hesitant rather than demanding. "Do you ever wish you could do the same with maestro? Marry him?"
Ezio couldn't help his smile. Without realising it, his hand went up to the string around his neck, fingers twirling the golden disk threaded in it. When he looked up into the crowd, he found Leonardo's eyes locked on his, his fingers rubbing the beads wrapped around his wrist, that small but genuine smile on his face that still made Ezio's heart throb. He chuckled. Leonardo was completely oblivious to the wedding he was supposed to be in charge of.
Not averting his gaze from Leonardo's, Ezio quietly replied, "No. We don't need anything like this."
A story of how Ezio and Leonardo kept the promises they never made.
