“How did you even get it in there?” Ed exclaims, pressing his fingers into his temples in an attempt to somehow will this whole scenario away, and then winces as another crash echoes from the cabin beyond.
Stede squeezes himself in between Ed and the door, patting behind himself for the knob. “Let me just—if you’d give me a moment—”
Ed seizes Stede by his lapel in a panic. “You’re not going in there, are you?”
“He’s an intelligent beast—he needs enrichment!”
“Yeah, I reckon chewing your arm off will be pretty goddamn enriching!”

Summary
Ed is an engineer aboard the Revenge, an interplanetary research vessel on a multi-year mission to study Jupiter's moon Europa. An accident requires that Ed awaken from cryostasis over six months early, and finds his only companion to be Stede, the ship's onboard AI. They develop an unconventional friendship, but is it possible to have more?
This is classic mutual pining with a sci-fi twist, inspired by all of my favorite stories about the nature of personhood.

“You–” Ed was struggling to parse what Stede was saying. “You’re playing your version of this song for me, right now? Like, in real time?”“Yes, Edward, that’s correct,” said Stede softly.
Ed’s brain momentarily seized up. He supposed it made sense that Stede was capable of learning a set of rules to do something like arrange and play a piece of music. There was something unnerving about this song, though. It felt, well–it felt organic . Reactive. Almost collaborative in a way. Ed was lost in the push and pull of it, until the last notes softly petered out.
“So, what did you think?” asked Stede. It sounded nervous again. Why the hell would someone program an anxiety response into a bot?

Summary
"I'm not going to hurt you," Stede said quietly. "I came to tend your wounds."
The demon raised his head then, and Stede finally saw his face. He had a strong brow, a short, silvering beard to match the long hair that hung around his naked shoulders, piercing brown eyes that somehow seemed to burn as they regarded Stede with suspicion, wild and powerful, unlike anything he had ever seen before.
He was beautiful. And that was the trickery of him, wasn't it? But Stede couldn't help but feel that someone like him could only have been shaped and sculpted by divine hands.

Ed is a demon that Stede's monastery summoned and trapped in their garden. Stede is a novice monk that is tasked with caring for him and must not open the garden gate under any circumstances. But as the friendship and attraction between the demon and the novice grows, Stede finds himself shocked by his own desires.
