It only takes three rings for Richie to pick up the phone. This is pretty standard for Richie. He’d told Eddie once that the first time his phone rings, he usually has to find it somewhere in the room. The second time it rings is when Richie sees the Caller ID, and if he picks up on the third ring, that means Richie likes whoever is at the other end. He’d found that infuriating when Richie first told him, and vividly remembers how he’d bitched about missing important opportunities if he was answering phone calls based on his mood. Right now, however, knowing that Richie is answering the phone because he wants to talk to Eddie brings nothing but total relief.

He’d wanted nothing more then, and he wants nothing more now, and the call of another coast is nothing more than the ghost of his mother, the whisper that he isn’t brave enough to take what he wants, that he’s not deserving, that he’d be safer back in stupid Derry, clown-less now but no less miserable. Eddie has spent his entire life filled with want, bursting at the seams with desire.

Summary
Defeating Vecna should be all that matters, and yet there’s still a part of Will that turns bashful under Mike’s attention, desperate to have as much of it as he’s allowed. He turns his head towards him only to be confronted with the earnestness of Mike’s expression, the slight downward furrow of his brow even as he smiles, trying to be encouraging. It’s an expression that’s both alien and familiar, a level of care that only Will ever gets to see. He loves Mike for being the only person who’s ever cared for him like this, in the ways he is increasingly sure he’s never deserved. Mike, who is the same boy that looks on the rest of the world with a scowl and a chip on his shoulder but always treats Will with consideration, gentle since that very first day they met. Will can’t help but love him, despite everything that’s happened – he’s his best friend, estranged or not, and the one person he’ll always know best in this world. He couldn’t shake Mike out of him even if he tried.

Mike has been standing in front of a door for the last three hours.
Not just any door. Will’s door. At least, he’s pretty sure it’s Will’s door, if the barely-sober girl he’d approached could be trusted. She’d let out a gleeful noise the moment he asked for Will Byers, stringing together a mix of garbled praise and nearly coherent sentences that directed him here. The door, however, hadn’t opened no matter how many times he’d knocked.
He’s almost one hundred percent sure that means this is Will’s door.
