Summary
His date smiles, his voice perfectly soft, "I mean it. Darry is my brother."
Even though he's clearly expecting this, Dallas can see clear as that he doesn't bear a single resemblance to Darry that Dallas can see from where he's sitting across from him. Reflexively, he tries to find a feature, any feature that can tip him off, watching his date wipe his fingers off on the napkin in his lap.
There were things he knew about Darry Curtis in certainty and uncertainty: that he was the oldest of his brothers, that he was married to Paul Holden going on twenty odd years, that his parents had died in a car accident in January in 1965 that gave him the empire he had now, that he was a Socs Soc back in Tulsa who'd been hailed as their golden boy, and he lived up to that moniker in every way until Dallas had been reclaimed by his sister in 1965.
Dallas Winston goes on a date with a very unexpected party.

Summary
It's got nothing to do with God or getting into heaven though, as Jennifer watches Ponyboy wipe at Dallas' face. It's the plain fact that even though she never is all that happy to accommodate, she feels the need to, always feels herself caring about the people who land in her lap no matter how thin or fat her wallet was, no matter how exhausted she felt.
It's become second nature for Jennifer now.
Jennifer Curtis brings home another stray, courtesy of her son Ponyboy Curtis. Alternatively: Dallas Winston enters Ponyboy's life and never intends to leave.

Summary
"Well — I guess it's about girls and stuff," Soda admits, and Ponyboy shifts in bed more, wondering what Soda is going to say, what he's trying to say. Soda is never one to really beat around the bush; he also wasn't as blunt as Darry could be. "I mean —"
"You know I ain't into girls, right?" Ponyboy teases and Soda grins at him. "I don't think they're all that dissimilar though."
Soda nods, biting at his lip. "I just – I was wondering what it's like? To – to be in love, I guess."
Soda asks his older brother, Ponyboy, about love. Ponyboy tries to answer.

Summary
There's a kid curled up in the blankets that are meant for Mickey Mouse — it's easy to distinguish the mop of brown hair from the bright red blanket that Ponyboy came in here to steal and for a moment he's not sure what to do, exactly about the sleeping boy in the stable that shouldn't be there.
December, 1961 — Ten year old Ponyboy Curtis finds a boy sleeping in the stables.

"I got a job. Full time, and I'm gonna try tutoring on the side, so we can get the bills paid. I figured — I figured I haven't been doing enough around here, and Dally can't keep giving us money when I can, too."
Still, his brother's eyebrows furrow together as if he can't actually believe Ponyboy's words, as clear and concise as they are.

Summary
He hadn't bet on a fire, and he hadn't bet on Ponyboy rushing in first and Johnny after him. All he'd done was follow them to the fire moments after, cursing out Ponyboy and Johnny both, trying to pull them out of the inferno before them, not caring what it took, not caring about those damn kids in the face of his boyfriend and his packmate.
He'd pulled Johnny out of the window, right as there had been a crack, and a groan and then Ponyboy screaming for him.
The beam doesn't hit Johnny. It hits Ponyboy instead.

Summary
"So that's it? You're just gonna go whenever you get pissed?"
Ponyboy keeps walking down the front steps, incensed. The whole neighborhood can probably hear them right now as he pushes open the front fence. He's sure that they're going to be gossipping in the morning, he's sure that someone might call the fights as Darry goes on, "Ponyboy!"
He doesn't turn around. The payphone is right down the block and if he turns around, if he goes back inside, he is going to punch his brother in the face in front of Soda. And he can't do that. If he does that, they'll get separated in a system that doesn't care for them, Soda will flunk out of school, and where would they be? How would their parents feel if he did that?
In September 1965, things are a little different. For one thing, Ponyboy is seventeen years old and an older brother to Sodapop Curtis. For another, he's not in college — not with his parents dead. And a third, he's dating Dallas Winston and has been for about a year now.
And last thing: it's two am, Ponyboy is alone, and Bob Sheldon is roaming Tulsa, drunk.
