Something flickers inside Adam, then. Not grace—this is different. Closer to what he felt in that diner, mere hours after they fled the tsunami of hell and neither he nor Michael were ready to admit the full truth of what they wanted from each other at the same time as they carefully confessed that they knew they’d figure it out together.
Michael meets his eyes, and Adam thinks he might feel it too: the red-hot flame, somehow gentle as a candle as it roars in an inferno.
Huh. Something to think about, then.

Summary
Ask any kid what their superpower would be, nine times out of ten the answer will be flying. Adam, son of a nurse and a bit of a goody-two-shoes, was always the odd one out choosing the noble imaginary superpower of healing people.
If Adam could go back in time—and technically, he could—he’d change his answer. Not to flying, and not from healing; he knows now that he can have it all.
He’d like to kneel down in front of baby-Adam and say, hey kid, pick love, because someday you’re going to have everything anyone could ever want at your fingertips, and you’ll be sharing it with the love of your life. You’ll fly straight through the atmosphere and fix broken bones with a snap of your fingers and sit invisible in the corner of a room you’re not allowed in. You’ll eat until you can’t anymore and still have room for seconds. You’ll be able to pick up a car to save a baby, if that situation ever arises, and it won’t even be adrenaline that does it.
He wants to say, no matter what nightmares come your way, something good is waiting for you too. You’ll share your body with someone who loves you. You won’t ever be alone again. You’ll always be warm.

Summary
When Michael looks outside, he only gets a half-second glimpse of Lucifer, suddenly and inexplicably presenting himself not in his ragged True Form, but as the blond man Michael thinks was once called Nick, before he vanishes. He vanishes.
The pull of magic makes itself known. Somewhere, a powerful witch is holding Lucifer in place. Somehow, she’s managed to leave Michael and Adam behind.

Summary
Adam broke the first mirror he saw. It wasn’t even on purpose; he’d stopped at a McDonald’s for a cheap snack, balked at the price, ducked in the bathroom to piss, and—got stuck looking in the mirror. He doesn’t know how long he stood there, just staring at himself, but an older man had walked in, startling him, and Adam, forgetting himself, scrambled to hide Michael from view. The metal water bottle he’d stolen from a gas station swung at the glass and sent shards flying. It was luck that he didn’t get cut—the bottle was dented and glass was embedded in his jacket but his skin was unmarred. Not his dignity, though; he flew out of the McDonald’s faster than they’d flown out of the cage.
Sometimes he has nightmares about it. About the mirror shattering. Watching it happen, knowing that the same happened to Michael. He pretends that covering them up helps, even if he knows that really, all he’s doing is pushing off the inevitability of healing.

His breathing has picked up its pace; his chest heaves and his soul glows in an umbra around Michael’s grace, like it’s trying to escape, trying to be seen. Jack tried to prepare Raphael for this, telling them that Michael cared for this human, that he was devastated once he was gone. Gabriel tried to explain Michael’s grief in the Empty, how it spread through the void and manifested itself in lightning stripes upon tarred ground, how he wore his vessel in death. Neither warning prepared Raphael for this: someone willing to fight for him.
That had been their job, once. To fight for Michael. Stand at his side, enforce his orders, follow his command. They had even done what he’s doing. They had gone back on their decision, ignored the apocalypse, done everything in their power to break him from the Cage.
They tried. They failed. They died.

Summary
His worries acquiesced, Gabriel had flown off to make more stars. With his brothers beside him, he’d known with a naive certainty that nothing could ever hurt him.
It’s funny, in a painful and ironic sense, that he was killed by all of them at one point or another. It’s funnier that he wasn’t.
What’s funniest is that the Shadow is not looking after any of them. It seems more frustrated than anything, scuttling through its dark hallways, swatting at every fallen demon and angel that screams wakefulness. The void follows in its wake, cutting through the explosive lights of futile fights between beings that have already killed each other.
Gabriel counts his lucky stars. He’s accustomed to running away. The Shadow will never find him.

Summary
The pain in his chest trickles down in cracks of lightning that creep through him in slow motion. Time is frozen, and all he knows is his end and his failures and the pain.
There is a human concept Adam has brought up before—life, flashing before your eyes as death sinks in. His first death was drawn out, torturous and endless. He once told Michael that he saw it all, birth to untimely death. His mother, his friends, his entire existence, reduced to a slideshow of half remembered images.
His second death, the one Michael couldn’t protect him from, was too quick for a slideshow. Michael knows; he was in Adam’s mind when it happened, as always, and nothing came as the rapture took him. As it left Michael behind.
It’s Michael’s turn to die now, and he has a lot to review before he lets go.

There’s a question that has been lurking in the back of their mind since the day Joshua came to tell them and Michael that God was gone. Finally, looking down with disgust at the humans who can do no right, they let themself ask it.
Is God even alive?
Think logically, Raphael. That’s Lucifer’s voice in their head. Think logically. Is this what God wanted? Lucifer would say yes. He would say that God planned out every terrible misstep taken by humans. That it’s His fault they became this evil.
Michael would say yes too. He would say that God saw the beauty in the macabre, that He set out these creations to choose their destinies and live how they see fit. Not like He did angels, but Michael wouldn’t say that.
What does it matter? Gabriel would say. Come join us and see. Run away and find me. The offer still stands.
