Hello. I’ve never done this before, so I’m not quite sure how it goes but—I need a date for Friday, December 21st. My work is hosting a holiday party and for the past three years, I have gone alone. Which has been fine, really, until my colleagues began making rather unseemly comments. And my boss—well, if you come with me, I’m sure you’ll gather Elias’s character when you meet him. He’s a bit...unsettling, and I’d rather have someone there as a bit of a buffer.

Stanley nodded slowly, chewing his lip as his mind raced with hurried, half-constructed conclusions before a contradiction would come along and sweep it clean again. It was an unconscious habit that had been a small, throw away detail when the Narrator had come up with it, but for some reason, was now the sole focus of his attention. Pierce it, his mind whispered suddenly. Make him bleed. Blood, yes, make him bleed.
