Work Text:
Michael flopped on the bed after a day of hunting. Landing on the bed with a soft thud, the corners of his eyes caught sight of a shiny object on his desk.
“That wasn’t there before.”
He quickly stood up and walked over to his desk. It felt as if the object was screaming at him to come over. The light from the window illuminated the object and Michael covered his eyes blinded.
He grabbed the object and realized what it was. A golden crown. It was scratched on some edges and worn out on the rim.
“It’s pretty…”, he muttered. Something about this crown, it was so familiar. It felt like a distant memory even. It felt like an itch in his head as he fumbled over trying to figure out where he first saw it. He gently held onto the crown and felt a wave of comfort take over him.
Michael was pulled out of thought as his head snapped at the door creaking. Tommy was leaning against the door frame.
“Uncle Tommy?” Michael asked.
“Hey kid, happy 18th birthday”, Tommy walked over to Michael and ruffled his head. Michael scratched his neck.
“Thanks.”
Michael held out the crown to Tommy and tilted his head to the side questioningly.
Tommy grabbed the crown from his hand, “This”, he pointed at a small text engraved into the crown from the inside, “Was your dad’s, Ranboo’s, crown.”
Michael looked over at the engraved text, it read, “Tubbo and Michael”, in cursive with a small heart next to it.
“Why did you give me this?”Michael asked.
“You wanted to learn about your parents, no?”
“Well yeah.”
Michael’s bed dipped down as Tommy took a seat. He grabbed his scabbard and pulled it off over his head. He patted the space next to him.
“Get comfortable”, Tommy leaned back against the headboard. Michael saw warmth in Tommy’s blue eyes. Those eyes he’s only seen with determination and happiness, being overwhelmed with sadness. He can see the nostalgia and sadness in Tommy’s eyes but there was also a sense of happiness.
“Where do I start…. Tubbo and I were best mates.” Tommy chuckled. “He was truly the best.”
The admiration and warmth in Tommy’s voice sent chills down Michael’s back. He doesn’t think he’s ever heard Tommy sound so endearing. Michael fidgeted with his hand as he tried to remember any moments with his dad. He wished he could’ve met his dads at least once when he was old enough to remember.
“One day Ranboo appeared out of nowhere! And Tubbo just clicked with him. For people who just met, they looked like they’ve known each other for their whole lives. Ranboo stole my best friend away, or at least that’s what I thought at the time but I later saw that they had a completely different bond. They were lovers, I was still Tubbo’s best mate. Ranboo, that f*cker, even told me that he thought Tubbo was his soulmate”, Tommy pretended to gag.
Michael had a few blurry memories from his childhood and could recall his dads’ relationship. It was something special, he could feel it.
“I didn’t even know they got married until way later! Tubbo thought I had died so one day I just popped up at his house and found out those two were married and had adopted you! I was so pissed he didn’t tell me”, Tommy chuckled.
Michael knew that his dads found him alone with his chicken in the nether. They took him in after Michael’s parents were nowhere to be seen. Michael remembers crying his eyes out the day his chicken passed away. He was probably 8 or 9.
Silence filled the air as the two refused to address the elephant in the room. A heavy thought weighing both of them down. Deciding to finally ask, Michael looked straight into Tommy’s blue eyes.
“How did my parents die, uncle Tommy?”
Tommy did know what Michael was thinking of before he even asked. He just wasn’t as ready to talk about it as much as he thought he was. He gripped the pillow tight until his knuckles paled.
Tubbo giggled as Ranboo sprinted to their shared home. Tubbo was getting a piggyback ride after he complained about how much his legs were hurting.
“I could get used to this big man”, Tubbo laughed.
“Please don’t”, Ranboo didn’t mind it at all though.
Tubbo looked up at the sunset. The orange hue reflected off of Ranboo’s ring that was on his horn. “You look pretty like this”, Tubbo said. He grabbed a strand of Ranboo’s soft white hair and tucked it behind his ear.
“Oh thank you”, Ranboo blushed and Tubbo hooked his arms tighter around Ranboo’s chest.
Tubbo let himself rest on Ranboo’s back and closed his eyes. Ranboo was looking down at the ground covered in white snow hummed softly for Tubbo. He smiled as he felt Tubbo loosen in his grip and lean into Ranboo’s back.
Upon arriving at the wooden house, Tubbo tried to hop off Ranboo’s back.
“Let me down Booooo”, he struggled to get out of the other’s grip.
“Nooooo”, Ranboo said with a forced high pitched voice as he mimicked Tubbo’s stretch of words.
“I wanna go see Michael, let me down or I’ll sell your organs”, Tubbo pouted.
Ranboo chuckled nervously, “How about we don’t do that?”
The moment was interrupted as slow clapping could be heard getting closer. Snapping out of their sappy moment, the duo were on edge. Something about this felt off. Way too off for some reason, Tubbo didn’t know why he felt chills in his back, he can’t explain it but it was a gut feeling. And his gut feeling was telling him to run.
“Hello? Who’s there?” Ranboo called out.
Tubbo hopped off the other’s back and Ranboo let him. A figure could be seen approaching from the corner. The figure rounded the corner and could be seen clearly. Tubbo’s sweet smile turned into a scowl and his hand flew for his sword. Ranboo audibly gasped in horror.
The smiling mask was unmistakable. Dream.
His dirty blonde hair was put in a small ponytail at the back of his head and his iconic white mask rested on the upper right side of his head. His face easily exposed, Tubbo could see the many scars painting his face. Ranboo shook slightly in fear but quickly strained himself.
“How does one even get that many scars on their face?”Ranboo shivered. His dead green eyes seemed to stare right through Ranboo.
“Ah-dorable”, Dream continued to slow clap.
“Dream… How did you get out?”, Tubbo scowled. He could already sense his husband’s uneasiness. He was gripping his sword’s handle but had yet to pull it out.
Dream completely ignored him and looked at Ranboo. Ranboo could feel the other’s eyes on him and felt his insides churn upon seeing the cracks on the white mask. That simple smile on the mask shook fear deep into Ranboo’s bones. He had a sickening smirk. He uncomfortably looked away from the green eyes which seemed to scream psychotic.
“You got quite the house Ranboo, an adorable little family too. I have to say I’m quite proud of you”, Dream’s tone was basically dripping with amusement.
It pissed off Tubbo.
Ranboo clenched his fists but then felt Tubbo’s small hand on his fist reassuring him. Ranboo had always loved how Tubbo’s hands looked so small compared to his, he loved how it seemed to fit perfectly in his hands.
“It’ll be fine”, his eyes seemed to tell him and gave him a small smile. Tubbo gently squeezed his hand. A sense of relief and comfort washed over Ranboo and he straightened his posture.
“Go check on Michael”, Tubbo told him in enderman. His pronunciation was sloppy but got the point across.
“I can’t just leave you here alone”, Ranboo whispered back.
“Go, I have a plan so I’ll keep him distracted”, Tubbo said. He did not have a plan, he just wanted to reassure Ranboo so he could confirm Michael’s status. There’s no way Dream knows about Michael. He couldn’t possibly.
“What are you two lovebirds whispering about?” Dream asked.
Ranboo nodded nervously but let go of his hand and ran to the house.
“Oh?” Dream said amusingly.
“Why are you here?” Tubbo felt ten times more nervous now that Ranboo wasn’t here with him.
“I just wanted to visit an old friend. Can I not do that?” Dream asked.
Tubbo drew his sword and pointed it at him. “You’re not welcome here.”
“I’m offended. I thought we were buddies Tubbo, remember when I helped you back in L’manburg. People thought our relationship was adorable! I even lent you my armor, you still have it, no?” Dream’s hand rested on his chest and as he faked being deeply hurt by the words.
“I threw out your armor a long time ago. You tried to blow me up, Dream. Cut the bullshit. Why are you here? What more do you want from us?”Tubbo's eyes were sharp and caught every moment Dream made.
Ignoring Tubbo, Dream’s sight caught the ring hooked around Tubbo’s horn.
“Congratulations on your marriage by the way. Didn’t expect you two of all people. You two do make a good couple in my opinion though. Adorable height difference really. So what’s in the house?”
Tubbo’s jaw clenched.
“I’m sure you already know. Why are you asking?”, he deadpanned.
“It’s more fun to ask. So Michael, huh? Such a generic name but he was an adorable fella. Smiled back at me when I showed him my mask. He even showed me around the portraits in the house. Quite the cozy little house you got here,” Dream mused.
“You bastard, what did you do to him?” Tubbo’s grip on his sword was tight enough to break the wooden handle.
Dream threw his arms up in confusion.
“I would never hurt a child.”
Tubbo scoffed. “Funny joke. What do you have against Tommy, Ranboo, and me?”
“Nothing! Don’t flatter yourself by thinking you’re somewhat useful to me. It’s fun, you youngsters are the easiest to manipulate. It’s hilarious in fact,”. Dream cackled.
“Is it because we remind you of Sapnap and George?” Tubbo asked nervously. Where is Ranboo?
“Excuse me?” Dream sounded slightly thrown off.
“You’re mad that you don’t have the type of relationship we have right? You’re mad that you fucked up with your own friend group and are now trying to feel like you’re in control. By ruining us. To feel like your friendship falling apart was all part of the plan, isn’t that right? To feel in control.”
Dream’s smile faltered and he brought up his hands to his eyes to cover them.
“Shut up you don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“THAT’S WHY GEORGE LEFT YOU RIGHT?” Tubbo screamed. He was cracking at Dream.
“SHUT UP YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING!” Dream screamed back and Tubbo heard a sobbing noise behind the hands that hid Dream’s face.
Tubbo hated how pitiful Dream looked. He hated how he could feel an ounce of pithiness against the guy.
“Is that what you thought I would say?” Dream threw his head back in laughter and gripped at his dirty hair with both hands. He looked crazy.
“W-what?”, Tubbo took a step back and Dream took one forward.
“Please. Sapnap was just a tool, a puppet. But George?”, Dream wheezed,” He wasn’t even a tool, he was completely useless. Following me blindly because of love, it was hilarious! He was entertaining to keep around but it got boring. He was always asleep, and couldn't even be helpful.”
Tubbo continued to take steps back, intimidated as Dream inched towards him.
“And you, Tubbo, are exactly the same, absolutely useless.”
Tubbo took a step back but tripped on a rock. He stumbled down on snow as Dream hovered over him. The sky was pitch black and Tubbo felt the stars staring down at him as he looked up at Dream.
Right on cue, Ranboo came walking out with Micheal in his arms. Both of Ranboo’s were purple. Tubbo gasped. Micheal jumped out of Ranboo’s arms and ran over to Tubbo.
“Dada!”, he called out and hugged Tubbo’s arm.
“Ranboo?”, he called out helplessly. He was in endermode.
Dream looked at Michael who gave him a small wave. Dream grinned and returned the wave.
“Ranboo, kill Micheal and Tubbo.”
Tubbo’s eyes widened and he cursed under his breath. He scrambled up to grab Micheal in his arms and ran. Tubbo sprinted into the house because he knew he couldn't outrun Ranboo out in the open. His best choice was to try and hide.
“You can hide all you want Tubbo! I’ll still find you”, Dream called out after him.
Ignoring Dream, Tubbo ran upstairs and shoved Michael into a closet. He could hear Ranboo breaking the door downstairs to try and fit through now that he was 8’5.
“Dada?”, Micheal asked.
Tubbo forced a smile and patted Micheal’s head.
“We’re going to play hide and seek with papa okay? So stay quiet and hide!”, Tubbo smiled and Micheal nodded happily. He was shoved into the closet and Tubbo locked the door shut.
Ranboo was making his way up the stairs. Tubbo could hear the incoherent muttering from the other and hid behind a crafting table. If he was going to die, he’d at least save Michael. Before Ranboo could make it up, Tubbo texted Tommy. He pulled up his chat.
“I need help
Come to Snowchester as fast as possible”, it read.
Tubbo’s breathe shook. He tightened his grip on the diamond sword and looked down at his hands. They were shaking and the diamond sword seemed to rattle as it hit the floor and wall. Quickly calming himself with deep breaths, Tubbo realized Ranboo was only a few feet away. Ranboo’s legs seemed to be almost dragged on the ground as he was slouched down. The long lanky legs appeared right next to him and Tubbo sprung up.
He swung his sword but saw Ranboo’s face. A huge smile turned his way and his head tilted to the side, his eyes were back to its normal colors. Tubbo blinked and was met with purple eyes staring back at him. It took a moment for Tubbo to realize he was imagining the whole image. Tubbo couldn’t hit Ranboo, he couldn’t bring himself to even create a single scratch on Ranboo.
“Dammit”, he thought before his neck was grabbed and he was slammed against the wall. The loud slam echoed in the house and shook the room. Tubbo’s back arched as it collided with the hard wall. He gasped out in pain and he felt his eyes watering. The air in his lungs was knocked out as he fell into a coughing fit.
Ranboo's grip on Tubbo’s neck was tight. It was too tight yet it was tightening by the second. Tubbo could feel his legs floating above ground. Tubbo stretched his hands to Ranboo and scratched at his arms.
“Ranboo”, Tubbo panicked.
His eyes were pooling with tears. He continued to scratch at Ranboo’s arms in a poor attempt to loosen the grip. His short legs kicked back and forth but couldn’t reach the taller man.
“Please Ranboo snap out of it. I beg of you.” Tubbo wanted to scream but could barely mutter out the sentence. He felt his throat drying.
The grip on his neck tightened. Fat tears dripped from Tubbo’s eyes and his vision blurred. He could feel his arms and legs losing strength and they pathetically fell to his sides. His limbs pitifully collided with the wooden wall. He attempted to wheeze and cough for air but was unable to create a single sound.
His vision started to darken. Unable to stay conscious, his vision flicked between blurs and black.
Using the last of his strength, he forced out a mutter.
“Sorry, Ranboo.”
The grip on his neck slowly loosened and Ranboo’s right eye seemed to flicker between green and purple.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t save you”, Tubbo thought as his eyes closed and he waited for his doom.
Suddenly freed from the grip, Tubbo fell down to the ground. He could feel the ground with his legs and the grip around his neck was no longer there but the feeling lingered. He wheezed for air and struggled to breathe for a second. Without the strength to stand or hold himself up, Tubbo collapsed to the ground.
Ranboo engulfed Tubbo in a crushing hug as he cried. Ranboo’s face burned tears but he didn’t care. Smoke raised from his face as it continued to burn but he couldn’t feel the pain that was supposed to come with it.
“I’m sorry I’m sorry Tubbo. I am so so sorry”, Ranboo chanted.
Tubbo hugged him back. “It’s … it’s okay Boo.”
Their moment was once again interrupted as Ranboo screamed out in agony and gripped his head.
“I can’t control it any longer Tubbo”, Ranboo winced.
“You gotta fight it Ranboo, please”, Tubbo’s throat hurt speaking, the grip on his throat definitely left a bruise.
Ranboo shuffled to grab Tubbo’s diamond sword. He remembers making it for him years ago, it’s adorable how he still has it. The sword looked practically new, the blade shined under the torch lights and Ranboo could see his reflection on it. He could tell how well Tubbo took care of the gift. He handed the sword to Tubbo. Tubbo’s eyes flickered between the sword and Ranboo. He looked at him confused.
“Kill me Tubbo”, Ranboo softly said.
“W-what?”
“If you don’t kill me now, I’ll hurt you and Micheal. I’d rather be dead than injure or kill you so, please. I already hurt you once and I can’t… I can’t let that happen again. There’s no other choice”, Ranboo pleaded. Ranboo’s head hung low and he was gripping Tubbo’s hand like his life depended on it.
It did.
“NO! You only have one life left! What are you talking agh-,” Tubbo fell into a coughing fit. His throat was aching.
Ranboo quickly looked up to Tubbo worriedly. His eyes noticed the ugly purple forming in the shape of his hand on Tubbo’s neck. He hated it. He wanted to rip himself for it. Ranboo almost took the life of the person who he swore to protect with his life, the person who Ranboo would give up his life anyday for, and most importantly, the person whom he deemed as his soulmate. Tubbo noticed the guilty expression and rubbed Ranboo’s hand with his thumb. He hesitantly brought up Ranboo’s hand to his neck and gave him a small smile to tell him it’s fine.
Ranboo gently rubbed at his neck. Tubbo melted into the touch and closed his eyes. The hand quickly fell to the shining blade on the ground as Tubbo tried to follow its warmth.
Ranboo gave Tubbo a knowing look. “It’s time”, his eyes seemed to say.
Unable to speak, Tubbo cried and shook his head.
“I can’t”, he mouthed.
“Once you kill me, go run out the attic window with Michael”, Ranboo pressed the sword to Tubbo’s hand. He loosely grabbed the sword and engulfed Ranboo in a loose hug.
Ranboo tightened the hug. He brought up his hands to Tubbo’s forehead and gently swiped his bangs to the side to see his eyes. Ranboo has seen Tubbo’s eyes a few times before but he can’t help but be amazed each time.
Tubbo’s teary gaze met with Ranboo’s eyes and Ranboo kissed his forehead.
“I wouldn’t want to die in anyone else’s hands.”
“Okay”, Tubbo mouthed. He bit his lip in anger and tears uncontrollably dripped. He was dehydrated from all the crying. His lips were chapped and dry. They were probably cut and bleeding but he couldn’t feel it. He felt numb.
Tubbo carefully stood up and Ranboo held his arm out for support. Ranboo was on his knees with closed eyes. Tubbo’s eyes stung.
He raised the diamond sword and swung. He swung but stopped next to Ranboo’s neck.
“I can’t.”
“I can’t fight it any longer, please Tubbo. Tell Michael I… I love him”, Ranboo’s face was probably scarred from his tears. His eyes were starting to flicker purple and Tubbo knew it was time.
Tubbo raised the sword once again.
“I’ll make it quick”, he croaked.
“I know dear.”
“I love you Ranboo, my beloved”, he sobbed and the sword swung.
“I love you too, Tubbo Underscore, forever my beloved.”
Tubbo’s sword went through Ranboo’s chest cleanly. The glow in Ranboo’s eyes quickly faded away. Ranboo’s body fell to the ground as purple blood flooded the room.
[Ranboo was slain by Tubbo_ ]
Tubbo stumbled down to the ground and brought up Ranboo’s body to his chest and hugged it tightly. He bit his lip harshly to prevent himself from yelling out in agony. He couldn’t see anymore. The blur from his tears blinded his vision. He let go of the lifeless body and slammed his fists on the ground. Tubbo knew there was no time to waste though and quickly jumped up.
He shuffled to the closet to grab Michael. There was no time to grieve. He had to get Michael to safety.
Pulling the closet door harshly, the closet door slammed to the wall.
“Dada?”Michael asked curiously.
Tubbo pressed his hand on Michael’s eyes and grabbed him with one arm. He couldn’t let him see the blood or Ranboo.
“Shh we’re going to play hide and seek tag this time! But I’m going to carry you away”, Tubbo whispered. His voice broke.
“This- it’s been over a decade dammit!”Tommy aggressively wiped away his tears.
“You don’t have to continue if you don’t wanna”, Michael spoke softly. He engulfed Tommy in a hug.
“You deserve to know Michael.
Tubbo jumped out the attic window and used his body to shield Michael from any damage. The heavy load of snow under him left Tubbo undamaged. He ran and ran. His legs were aching but he didn’t care, Tommy’s house was too far away so he ran to Techno’s.
Half way along the way, he caught sight of Tommy’s shiny blond hair. Tommy quickly caught sight of Tubbo and ran over to him. Tommy took in the image and was instantly worried. Tubbo’s face was wet with tears, he had an ugly bruise in the shape of a hand on his neck, and an insane amount of purple liquid was covering his clothes.
Tubbo collapsed into Tommy and cried into his shoulder. He couldn’t even yell out as his throat was unable to make loud noises. Tommy engulfed the shorter in a hug without questioning, his heart broke at the silent sobbing on his shoulder. He could feel the tears go through his jacket wetting the fabric.
“Tubbo?” Tommy asked and Michael excitedly jumped down.
“Uncuh Tomy!”, he squeaked.
“What’s wrong Tubbo talk to me!” Tommy asked. He pushed Tubbo off and lifted Michael in his arms who happily let him.
Tubbo’s eyes were unfocused and he held out his bloody purple hand.
“D-Dream escaped”, he hoarsely said.
Tommy’s eyes widened.
“No.”
Tubbo tightened his hold on Tommy.
Looking at the very visible bruise around his neck, Tommy grabbed Tubbo’s hand and pulled at him.
“Let’s get you patched up first okay”, Tommy said breathlessly.
Tubbo didn’t move and looked down.
“Tubbo?”
“I know how to kill Dream”, he muttered.
“What?”
“He pulled up the chat and typed.
It read, “he only has one life left and he’s still at my house waiting. I can set off the nuke.”
Tommy nodded, “We can end this madness once and for all. If we leave him alive, who knows what will happen in the future. I’ll go get the remote for it.”
Tubbo grabbed Tommy’s hand.
“Please stay with Michael, I wanna be the one to kill him”, he typed.
“Tubbo no, I can go. You’re hurt”, Tommy refused.
Tubbo moved in front of Michael and pressed his hands on his ears.
“Ranboo’s dead”, he croaked out.
Tommy stared in shock and his eyes started watering.
“You’re lying”, Tommy whispered.
Tubbo shook his head.
“STOP LYING, H-HE WOULDN’T DIE THAT EASILY! HE’S RANBOO”, Tommy shouted.
“Please”, Tubbo mouthed.
“You better come back safe”, Tommy sobbed.
“I will, I promise. When have I ever broken a promise?”, Tubbo typed.
Tubbo hugged Tommy and kissed Michael’s forehead.
“Your papa loves you Michael”, Tubbo smiled and patted Michael’s head.
Michael stretched out his short arms and cupped Tubbo’s face.
“Why you crying dada?”, Michael asked curiously. His small hands struggled to wipe away the tears as the tears continued to spill. Tubbo let out a sobbing noise and kissed Michael’s forehead.
“Dada will be right back”, he whispered into Michael’s ear.
Tubbo saw Dream crouched down examining the snow outside the attic window near the snow. The snow was covered in purple blood. Ranboo’s blood from when Tubbo jumped out.
“Dream”, he called out. He could hear his voice coming back to him.
“Ah, is he dead?” Dream asked.
Tubbo looked down at the ground.
“I’ll take that as a yes”, Dream nodded. “It really is a shame though, Ranboo was one of the punks I liked.”
“Shut up”, Tubbo said quietly.
“Why’d you come back Tubbo? Do you have a death wish?” Dream raised his eyebrow.
Tubbo inched closer to Dream and raised his hands as if mimicking a surrender. He can see Dream hiding something behind his back.
“What are you playing at? You know your nukes can’t help you here”, Dream pulled out a trigger button.
Tubbo looked at him with wide eyes, “No!” he reached for the remote but Dream snapped it in half.
“It was worth a shot”, Dream shrugged, “Too bad.”
Dream took in the horrified face. Tubbo’s widened eyes and broken voice. His ripped clothes that were covered in purple blood. His messy hair that covered Tubbo’s eyes with the thick bangs. The large hand bruise on his neck that was obviously fresh and Ranboo’s. Tubbo looked like his whole life collapsed, it did. Dream cracked a small smile at the sight.
Tubbo stumbled over to Dream and threw his head back and laughed bitterly. Dream took a defensive stance.
“I destroyed your little weapon and you can’t beat me in a fight.”
“Here’s a little secret about me, Dream”, Tubbo’s raised hands landed on his head and he pulled up his bangs revealing his eyes.
His left eye revealed a radioactive hazard logo. Tubbo flung himself at Dream and pressed down on his left eye. His eye pooling with blood now mimicked red tears.
“I am the trigger to these nukes”, Tubbo said softly.
Dream looked up at Tubbo horror, “You’re killing yourself!”
“Let’s just go together, Dream”, Tubbo muttered.
“LET GO”, Dream screamed. He clawed at Tubbo’s hands and kicked at him. He could hear maybe even a bone or two breaking from Tubbo but the other didn’t budge.
“This ones for you big man”, Tubbo smiled.
Dream struggled to get out of Tubbo’s hold.

Tommy looked at the large explosion in the distance. A loud boom occurred. He pressed Micheal’s ears shut. The city of Snowchester was now in flames and destroyed.
Tommy noticed one new message in his chat.
Private message from Tubbo.
Take care of him for me Tommy wouldn’t ya?
…
“That was the last and first promise Tubbo broke”, Tommy choked out.
Micheal looked down at the ground. He had no idea this was what his parents went through to protect him. He realized his cheeks were damp with tears.
“Techno and I went back to Snowchester after looking for remains and possibly Tubbo but only the crown survived”, Tommy whispered.
Michael gently raised the crown and placed it on his head. The gold was cold against Michael’s hands but it felt ever so warm in spirit. It was a perfect fit.
“If the crown fits, wear it,” Tommy said softly.
